Professor Black: Melanie shook her head in disbelief. If any of this was about his being her godfather...She knew she had never though of him as a father figure and never would, but didn't tell him for the fear it would hurt him.
The events of the past day were horrific enough to land her a cell in Azkaban. Students had been hurt; people were killed. It didn't matter to Melanie who those people were or what they had done. She only wished Linus would realize that, because killing wasn't the answer-she would have been upset whether he was legally her guardian during her childhood or not. "I'm afraid you've got the wrong idea in your head," she told him. "This hasn't anything to do with legal arrangements, and I am well past seventeen. You kill to get out of certain situations-even the ones where you are responsible! We should have been in cells by now, biding our time. What we did was wrong." her voice was very, very calm and extremely soft. "I was going to turn myself in, after we caught Finch. I am responsible for what I did and I should pay for it. It isn't fair to those who have been hurt." Melanie spoke her true feelings, something she never did with anyone but Evan. What she didn't think, though, was that she really wasn't responsible at all. She had been drug into it by Linus, only agreeing to go to stop him. She didn't want him to kill; she didn't do any of it herself. She was merely arrested because she was there trying to save the students she cared so much about. But Melanie didn't notice it. She had been the one to open the cell and that was by itself a ticket to Azkaban. "I don't know what I'm going to do, but as soon as the ministry finds out the minister is dead we'll be the first they'll think of. We'll have to tell Jay how we escaped, which I am certainly fine with. She should've fired us last night. You do realize that, don't you?" The guilt was almost unbearable.
