Hockey shots

i've been trying out my k100d at my boyfriend's hockey games and thought i'd post a few interesting shots that i got. i find it really difficult to have a manual focus for this specific purpose and think that i'd like to get an automatic 200mm. i have a manual 135mm.

if anyone has some great advice for sports shots, it would be much appreciated. i really want to get some awesome shots of him, maybe to be able to get a large printout of.

if you can tell... he's the goalie, which i guess makes it easier for me to shoot him, since he doesn't move quite as much as everyone else does...

You got some good compositions there, but you need to bump up the ISO. 400 isn't really fast enough to get you fast shutter speeds in that environment. Try 800 or 1600 and that should get you faster speeds than 1/90. If your using a 135mm lens than you'll want shutter speed higher than 1/125. And for action shots closer to 1/400 and 1/500 would be more ideal.

Instead of using the pre programed modes put it in S or Tv (which ever Pentax is) for shutter priority, set your own ISO (to 800 or 1600, Pentax can handle the high ISO's very well) and then start with 1/125 or 1/250 for a shutter speed and adjust from there depending on the f/stop your getting. If your getting good f/stops then up the shutter a bit. You'll notice a bigger difference in the stop action of the players, instead of the bluryness from their fast movement.

Keep going out there and keep taking pictures. So far so good!!

thanks! that's the kind of advice i was looking for. i did move my Tv to something fast, but for some reason, when i did that the camera itself was slow and a lot of the time wouldn't let me take a shot?? it was very weird. however, i didn't play around with the iso, so that'll be my next thing i guess. right now, my f/stop for my 135mm is 2.8.

Outside of it being a MF lens, you should be good to go with that aperture. If it does end up going that wide then be precise with your focusing as the DOF will be very shallow.
