I used to wonder if I did the right thing with gifts.... but just decided to do what I wanted and not worry about it. I have heard of some high school teachers in the area getting big gifts (vacation, sports tickets, etc....) and some suspicion that it is bribing to make the teacher feel like they have to give a higher grade, or better college reference, or better position in band/sports team, etc... That's just wrong.
I don't know what other parents do in our preschool... I think some do nothing, some do small token gifts (candy, mug), or handmade item from the child... others I think do money like me. At a different pre-school, I used to buy lunch for the teachers in the classroom once in a while (it was located at my work).
Our DS4's preschool has several teachers involved in his classroom - 7 total. All do a wonderful job and I'm grateful that they go above and beyond to care for DS in incredible ways that make for a loving environment and to build his education - academic and social.
There is a parent association that voluntarily accepts money for each teacher, and gives a gift care (teachers' choice) with a card and each child's name on it. We give about $10-20 for each. I also gave a card to the 7 main teachers with $50 in each. And DS gave each a bar of mickey mouse soap from basin white (Grand Floridian Gift Shop).
It all adds up to more than I can afford, but I know the profession does not pay highly, and I just want to show some thanks for the care. I think it's a big deal how they care for my son while I'm at work.
