Hmm - I don't like this web site

I've been looking at a website that, I personally believe, has some security implications. You can look up people, their address, their phone numbers, their neighbours and even maps on the area.

The website is called - http://www.b4usearch.com - try it for yourself. Click on the 'People' tab, put in your own name and vague location (e.g. John Doe - Sussex) and see what it finds. When using my own name I got see details of me, my wife and all our neighbours with a map to my house.

Now I admit that this information is probably available via the Electoral Role but there may be other checks / balances before you can access it. As a test, I have used this website and tracked down addresses, phone numbers and maps to my work colleagues.

There is a link on the site to request that your details are removed from it. I've done this for my own name as I'm not comfortable with it being available. I am annoyed about it as a) we're ex-directory and not in the phone book and b) we've signed to the Telephone Preference Service to try and stop getting cold calls. Yet this website is broadcasting our details to the internet.

Im not sure if that is the one,but there is a site out there that i put in my details in and it told me everything about me!

the date we bought our house,the price,the tenants and the house phone number!

yet we are supposed to be ex-directory!

It found me and DW but I am a bit concerened that in order to remove my details I have to provide them with phone numbers and an e-mail address which currently seems to be the only information they are missing :

I'm certainly not going to provide them with it if they don't have it already

This site found my husband and his parents this is very worrying as they have telephone numbers etc but they didn't find myself and 3 children.

Just to test this works I pumped in David Beckham and got the record back with his address and the link to Victoria

I know what you mean Alison, my exhusband was listed twice, once at his address and also at my home address,with my old phone number, where he hasnt been for over 9 years, well not that Ive seen him here anyway

OK that's frightening. It didn't find me but it did find Scott and it just gave me the names and phone numbers of everyone who lives on our street. It also gave me my mum's details and phone number and Scott's parent's address and phone number which I am not happy about.

However it didn't find my sister or her OH, which leads me to wonder something. It only seems to pick up on people who own their houses, everyone I know who rents, lives with friends or family etc doesn't show up. Anyone else found this?

We are not on the list but my mother-in-law is. I am sure it is because when you fill out the Electrol Role you can opt out of having your details made public - that is what we did.

As you say the electoral role is in two versions one is sold to companies and is the edited version and the full version is for various agencies AND for public viewing at a local council office/town hall/library, so anyone can look at it!

Mine came up with my work e:mail and a number of others in relation to my work, suggesting people contact me on my work number.

It then had a nice map showing all my work contacts where I live!!! I work in social housing so not the best site I have seen!!!
