I am going to Hilton Head at the end of May and want to try a cruise on a schooner or large sailboat. Can anyone recommend
a company? Should you reserve seats before leaving home? Any help would be appreciated.

Over in Sea Pines, (i think that is what it is called.) You'll know it because it is the only town that you have to pay to get into. Anyway, "The Stars and Stripes" (America's Cup) is over there and you can sail on that. There are plenty of boats, but that is the most famous. Unless you would be from New Zeland ( that is our big rival in the race) it should be fun. America's Cup is the world's most coveted trophy. America won the cup from England in the mid 1800's and for the most part, esp. last time (now in NZ) kept winning. Thanks to America3 (cubed) PC social experiment. I won't get into that. America has only lost 3 races since enter the races back in 1800's Just trying to get a little background on the "The Stars and Stripes". It is owned by Dennis Connor and until the last 2 races, last race he almost sunk, he was a top contender in the sport. I forget which year this boat is, but it is not the Catomoran (I don't know how to spell) I think the next race is this October.

We've cruised on the Schooner Welcome (see previous link) and can vouch for the good time that we had. They even serve a little food and drink. Just be sure to go the bathroom before you board and to also bring sunscreen. If you have children, they are even allowed to steer; heck, even parents can steer! We had a blast doing this and you board it right in shelter cove! I forget the cost but don't remember there being a DVC discount available. You will be taken all the way to harbourtown and can see it from that vantage point.

Thanks for all the great replies. The Schooner Welcome emailed me with information. Apparently they take reservations a week ahead. Mornings are $30 adults $25 children. Afternoons are $35
for everyone. They take advance reservations for parties of 6+. I was told I could reserve 1 week ahead for other reservations.
I tried the schooner Natalie Todd out of Bar Harbor, Maine a few years back and I am looking forward to going again. I still haven't located any info on the Stars and Stripes but I am going to check that out as well. I appreciate the help. Have a nice day!

You might want to schedule it around sunset; i believe there's a special time in the evening that it leaves so that you can all see the sunset. it is gorgeous!

We were a little surprised to find out that the Stars and Stripes is not the one that raced under that name for the America's Cup. It is one of several that are part of a franchise under that name and are located in several places offering rides. :(
