Hitch hiking teenager

Last Saturday, I was driving thru a mall parking next to a grocery store. I was going to turn into a supermarket to get out onto the main road.

I saw a girl up ahead and I waited for her to cross the area, I wanted to drive thru.

She put her hand out for me to stop. I rolled down my window and she said she needed a ride that was maybe a mile away.

I asked her what she was doing and she said she was at a friends house and she had no shoes on and then she swore.

She was holding a horse blanket and I could not see her hands. She said I am @#$@ freezing, give me a ride.

I so wanted to give her a ride, but the swearing at me threw me off. I told her "Sorry, I don't give hitch hiker rides". A car behind me beeped at me to move it and she ran to that car, then I saw her run into the grocery store parking lot.

This girl only had to be 14 or 15 and I felt bad not giving her a ride, but not seeing her hands and swearing at me made my choice easy. I thought about calling 911, but I don't know if that merits an emergency. This town of 34,000 doesn't have cab service and I don't know if their busses run on Saturdays.

Some good samaritan I was.

Unfortunately, I would have done the same thing that you did. Not being able to see her hands, would really have made me nervous too.

I don't pick up anyone. I would have called the police and had them go check her out and give her a ride. You just never know.

I agree. The police are better equipped to deal with this person than you or me.

I wouldn't pick her up. She sounds a bit too... hmmm what's the word? Well she sounds like she has very big cajonas (sp?) for a 15-yr-old. Sounds like trouble.

I wouldn't have given her a ride and I would have called the police. Her behavior sounds somewhat erratic IMHO.

I'dve called the police. Not by way of 911 but directly. Either she needed help...or the rest of the town needed protection from her.

Not much of a debate here, huh?

Hitchhiking is illegal for a reason. It is potentially dangerous to the hitchhiker and to the driver who picks up a stranger. Far too many crazies in the world today to either get in a stranger's car or to be the driver picking up a stranger.

I probably wouldn't even have rolled down my window.

Maybe someone in the town should look at opening up a taxi business would make a lot of money if only firm around.

I also wouldn't have given her a ride as she sounded a bit nutty, no shoes on, swearing and a horse blanket:confused:

Many years ago I both hitched many rides as well as gave many hitchers rides, but would never think of it today. I can't recall the last time I ever have seen one in recent years.

a teenage girl hitchhiking is so dumb, you know some day they might end up raped or even dead. :(

I would not even have made eye contact! Too risky these days. :(

About the dumbest thing I did was when I was 18, I had a flat tire and a trucker pulled over and talked me into taking a ride with him to the next exit. I was stupid back then, but it didn't take me long to get smart. After a couple of things he said, I convinced him the county sheriff was a close family friend (mini white lie;) ), so he left me alone. I'm very wary now if anyone pulls over and offers to help, and I'm even warrier of those that need a ride.

Sheesh, it's dangerous standing at a bus stop, let alone hitch hiking.
You can't help but wonder about kids like that. Why was she out there, did she really need help, was she about to rob you blind, who knows. :(
