PLEASE....Does anyone REALLY know the rules on re-filable mugs?
I have heard several different stories...
I heard you can only get re-fills where the mug was purchased?
I heard you can bring your old mugs from past years?
I heard that it differs from Resort to resorts?
Can anyone help, or point me to a site that will tell me what to expect!?

THANKS!!!

I have 4 boys, and the re-fillable mugs has saved me a lot in the past!!:p

You have to use the mug at the resort you purchased it at.

You will see people filling up all kinds of glasses...and people that have mugs for the resort, but very old ones. Like at the All stars, I have seen three different styles at the sports alone. Good thing about the all stars, you can use your mug at any one of the three resorts.

I'm not POSITIVE, but I think it was Safetymom that posted recently and posted what the new sign at CBR remodeled food court said. Something about it being for refills on mugs bought during the stay they were purchased in. Don't know if all resorts are implementing this?

Unfortunately, the answers will vary depending on who you ask. My understanding of Disney policy is that refillable mugs are good for your length of stay only. You'd have to purchase a new one for each trip.

Having said that, I've seen people bring in old mugs, mugs from other resorts, glasses, beer mugs, 7-11 Big Gulp cups, etc. and fill those and walk out without paying. It depends on the CM on duty at the register.

Enforcement of this policy varies by resort and more often by CM. Seems like it is treated more as an honor system.

I'm pretty sure if you checked with Disney they would say that the refillable mugs are for your current resort stay & you would need to purchase new ones for your next visit.

We purchased ones at CR last year & are returning again this year. I thought about just bringing the old ones back, but DH told me to "suck it up & spend the buck", so I'll be buying 5 new ones.

I thought I was being cheap by even thinking of bringing back the old ones - I couldn't imagine walking in with a beer mug or 7-11 Big Gulp cup. I'll be the first to admit I like to save a few $'s, but I'd be mortified :o if a CM walked up to me & said something - I wouldn't take the chance.

I will be at CBR again this weekend. I will take a picture of the sign and post it next week.

It said the mug was good for the length of stay when you bought the mug.

I didn't ask a CM since this sign was posted. I still think it is a bargain and don't use them from trip to trip.

To make matters more confusing is the two resorts in one stay issue. We will purchase mugs at our first resort and then again at our second... . No one is too sure on that policy either. I would never bring mugs from a previous trip back to a resort as I think this is not what Disney intended and would be taking advantage of the "honor system". If enough people do this I wouldn't be suprised if Disney either discontinued the refillable mugs or make it more of a hassle to use because of a "check system" that would have to be enforced (these are just guesses). I think it's understood that each trip new mugs should be purchase. Still not so sure about the rules on the switching resorts mid stay thing though...This is just my opinion after reading lots of posts on the subject.:D

Although I'll continue to bring back my mug since at the time I bought it, I was told it was good forever...the current policy is that it is good for your current stay. However, the signs in the foodcourts we visited this week could still be clearer. The signs above the drinks says refillable mugs (in AllStars and POR), and as does the new signs (I believe they also said for your stay). However, the signs in the rooms (I asked for and got one to bring home, if anyone needs to see it, from our maid) are very clear (The sign which tells about pizza delivery, and menu). It says:

.Free unlimited refills available from the beverage Islands until the end of your stay in which the mug was purchsed.

I again asked the food court manager in AllStars just Tuesday, and she said it will never be enforced, since so many were told in the past they were good forever. She did say the CM's have been told to no longer say that with the newer mug purchases

Ok, Im breaking my New Years Resolution, but here goes...

We were told at 2 different resorts, 2 different times(once without even asking) that the mugs are good for life. So, when I heard otherwise, I inquired to WDW about the policy. The response I got from the Executive Offices was that the "official, official thing" (said sarcastically) is that they are only good for the length of stay. However, the resorts have made up their own rules and as long as a guest has a mug, it will be refilled.

So, take that for what its worth.

LOL CamColt !!!

I just don't see how Disney can enforce the not using mugs from past years unless they issue mugs with barcodes.

I too was told that the re-fills were good forever when we purchased ours in 2000 from WL. Since 2000 we've only stayed in concierge, so it hasn't been an issue.

This year we may be staying at the WL Villas and I'll bring my mugs. If a CM says I can't use them, I'll buy new ones. No big deal.

I laughingly told my DH about the "great refillable mug" debate. I was surprised when he actually seemed miffed. He reminded me that when he bought his first refillable mug at WL years ago, the advertisement was, "Good for refills forever." For at least three years, he took his WL mug everytime we went down. Now, WDW didn't lose a lot of money over this since DH is not a caffeine addict, but I DO remember years ago (1997? I think) that these mugs were sold as being good forever. We bought new mugs at AKL during our last trip, but I saw no indication at AKL of any policy regarding their use.

Strange little tempest in a teapot. ;)

I don't see this as any different than a change in the speed limit. We all used to be able to drive faster on the road, then the energy crunch and they lowered the speed limit.

Disney changed their policy. They have the right to. Whether they enforce it is their choice. If the sign says mug is good for length of stay that is what I will do.

I also don't want to have to explain to my teenagers why it is OK to do something that the sign says it isn't.

Safetymom, I agree with your ethics, but not your reasoning. There's a public policy aspect to driving requirements and this is a given because we do not purchase the road's that we drive on. With respect to the mug situation, I would venture to say that when some people purchased those mugs they entered a contract with Disney. A contract requires an offer and acceptance. The offer: overt signs stating "good for refills forever." The acceptance of Disney's offer: the exchange of money for the mug. It can be argued that Disney entered a contract with the individuals who purchased the mugs under the aforementioned guise. I, however, will need a break from the legal realm when I visit the World in two days; therefore, I will be purchasing new mugs so as not to tempt myself into entering a heated, legal debate:)

I just said what we do. Everyone is free to follow their heart. Which according to this board is all over the board regarding this issue.

I don't care to debate, but I can think of other situations that the same thinking would apply.

This is one of those issues where we will always have differing opinions.

I was wondering if anyone was ever questioned about their mugs as being from a previous trip? Has anyone ever been refused a refill in an old mug?

I haven't been questioned about using a mug from a previous trip, but on one trip, after I had bought a refillable mug from the resort I was staying at (POR), I also bought a mug while I was at Blizzard Beach. I really like my BB mug better, so I started using that one. I just figured I had paid for my resort mug so I wasn't cheating the system. On my second to last night there, someone in the food court did approach me and said I couldn't use that mug there. It was no big deal, I just got my other mug. I didn't think about it until afterwards, but the employee had no way of knowing I really had a resort mug that was paid for. I wasn't really embarrassed, I guess because I knew I had paid for a resort mug even though there was no way the employee could have known. :D

We have been to the WL for the last 3 years and I had been told somewhere down the line before I found these boards that you could use the mugs over and over as long as they were at the same hotel (basic loyalty factor) So I never thought I was doing something wrong. We have 2 and take them with us each time, no one has ever said anything to us. I didnt know I was wrong until now, but I still dont know if its wrong because of the whole debate of each hotel following a diff policy

No, but then when we pulled into Allstars, it was the first thing I asked the food court manager. Since I was told my mug was good forever, I feel the way to change it would be whenever they come out with new mugs..those mugs would be "policed" if Disney felt like it. Obviously they don't. My children and grands understand why we re use our mugs, and they have been there when I've asked. I'm not doing anything wrong..I was told my mugs, when I bought them several years ago (for each resort I stay in, although many have been told one mug is good for all, and I have heard that being told byy CM's) were good forever..and Disney knows many, many were told that. The refill policy signs up now, are not the same signs that were there when I got my mug.
So, if you bought your mug before they changed the rule, and feel comfortable (and honest) reusing it, it's up to you. I know I do.

I have to say this year is the first time I saw signage saying. "Good for your length of stay." As aweful as the coffee is now at WDW we don't bother buying everyone a mug as we had done in the past, lol! I haven't "heard" of anyone ever getting grief using an old mug as well as using mugs from other resorts.

IMHO, I'm paying over $4,000 for my WDW trip, I think I can afford to buy a new mug each trip down.

For us, it's not worth the headache and possible embarrassment to lug our old mugs back to WDW to save some money on soda.

These threads on the great "mug" debate always crack me up!:p
