Anny ideas for daughter book choice.
She is 10 needs to do a historical fiction book.

Any of the American Girl books would be great. My dd, 10, eats them up!

What about The Totally Made-up Civil War Diary of Amanda MacLeish?

The American Girls books are great. Or you can do any of the Little House series or one of my personal favorites, The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

Another good one is Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, I think that is how you spell her name.

Where the Red Fern Grows and Summer of the Monkeys

Guns of the South

Rascal (although this may be based on a true story, I can't remember).

Light in the Forest

The Witch of Blackbird Pond

I was also going to recommend The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I just LOVED that book when I was a kid and when dd was old enough, I passed my very tattered copy on to her and she adored it too.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond was one of my very favorite books. Reading this thread makes me want to check it out of the library and read it again.

My daughter was absolutely hooked on Running Out of Time last year (and she was ten then). I can't remember the author's name, but it's historical fiction with a time traveling twist. The story is about a girl named Jessie who has lived her whole life in a frontier pioneer town. The whole town is very concerned about the typhoid (?) that's sweeping through the town; a few children have even died. Jessie's mother takes her aside and admits to her that her whole life is something of a lie: They're part of a historical exhibit, and people come to watch them every day on secret cameras. She's not over her outrage yet when her mother dresses Jessie in a pair of hidden blue jeans and sends her out of her comfortable life in search of medicine for her friends. She's never seen a car, never had a soda, and certainly never been out on her own.

The Root Cellar by Janet Lunn (a young girl's time travel into the Civil War)

Tom Sawyer
Huckleberry Finn
Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain

Cabin in the West
Early Thunder by Jean Fritz (colonial fiction)

Bound for Oregon by Jean Van Leeuwen (prairie wagon train)

Nothing to Fear by Jackie Koller (Great Depression)

Leatherstocking Saga --The Deerslayer, Last of the Mohicans etc by James Cooper

Thanks for the advice. My daughter loves things like sleepy ho;;ow. Going to check out witch book on amazon to see if she would like.
Many thanks

Thought I posted but I don't see it. Hmm.

G Clifton Wisler write some really good historical fiction books about the Civil War that would be at her grade level.

My favorite is Mr. Lincoln's Drummer. It's based on the true story of William Johnson Jr., the youngest person ever to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was 11 when he performed the deed that earned him the medal! It's told from his point of view and I think that kids will definitely identify with it. It is well researched and is paced well.

Well, jeez, now I want to read this one! :thumbsup2 At least the librarians don't look at me funny when I check out kid books occasionally, thank goodness. ;)
