Hiring a Nurse

Hello!
Has anyone ever hired a home care nurse to come to their resort room? We have a family member that will require a dressing change while we are at Disney. I was hoping for first-hand recommendations of companies to reach out to.

It is a question that pops up every once in a while around here, not often. I'm not sure that I've seen anyone report back what they ultimately ended up doing -- what agency, etc.

You might want to try contacting Advent Health. I don't know if you can pre-schedule a visit to your hotel room but it's worth asking.

RN here. May I ask - is this a simple dressing, or a complicated dressing? Will you have all the proper supplies needed for the dressing change? How many times will it need to be done while you’re there?

Sometimes families learn how to do things like that at home when leaving the hospital, say. (And imagining that could possibly come into play here, too.) The current nurse who’s doing the dressing may be able to teach you how, especially if it’s a simple dressing change. That might be the easiest way. (Sometimes families who’ve been doing it for a while know more about it than a brand new person coming in, anyway.)

If worse comes to worst you could probably take him to an ER, but there are some downsides to that (long wait, germ factor, ? Insurance issues, etc.)

Perhaps your current home agency might have more ideas about referring him to somewhere down there, but that could get complicated, unfortunately. As someone who fully appreciates the value of someone who’s ill getting away for a bit with family, I sure hope you can find someone who can help.

This!! I worked in a burn unit/clinic and did lots of wound care. Even in the outpatient clinic, we would make sure that the patient and/or family were able to do wound care. The nurse you hire may not perform the wound care how the physician/clinic wants it performed. My second thought is if it is a more complicated dressing change, maybe the disney trip needs to be rescheduled if possible? I would also just check with the healthcare provider to see what they think, OP.

I'm going to second/third/whatever the recommendation that a family member learn how to do the dressing change. Even if you are able to hire a nurse to come to your hotel, it is better to be prepared for emergency changes. I've been the caregiver and the patient for dressing changes through the years and, while it isn't always fun, it has been so helpful for our family to know how to take care of it on our own when the unexpected comes up. It’s a Hickman port. They have made us a tutorial on how to do it but I’m uncomfortable so I was hoping to pay someone. We only need it once. I’m in Canada

The US health system is insurance (negotiated prices) driven. The cash price may be $$$. Call the Advent Health, Lady Jane's suggestion. Ask about a nurse to your hotel room and going to an Advent location.
