We are traveling to WDW in mid September and we were planning on driving down and staying somewhere halfway since its a long trip.

We were thinking of booking at HHI for the one night.

Was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. We are traveling from NJ and will have our 5 month old baby with us.

thanks!

I would post on the transportation board; this board is for Disney resorts.

Many people on the transportation board are used to answering ?'s such as this. Hopefully the mods will move your post over there.

I just posted here because HHI resort is a disney resort.

We live on Long Island travel to HHI yearly and WDW every 18 months.

I would not suggest using HHI as a hotel stop on the way down since it's not right off 95, you exit the highway and make your way another hour (the way I drive) to the resort down a two-lane road. You'll be tired and just wanting a bed, while the HHI resort and area is best experienced as a beach+pool+campfire day. There's little to thrill you as a passing-thru visitor. You need a few days to really settle in and enjoy the resort.

If anything, carve out a few days on the way back up to relax and recharge after a fun, yet busy, WDW vacation.

I echo the previous comment about skipping HHI if it's just for one night. We just moved to coastal GA and were eager to check out the DVC on HHI. It's quite a distance off the interstate and is very different from WDW DVC resorts (no restaurant or gift shop, not on the beach, not much of a Disney vibe at all). I'm sure it's got its positives, but it sounds like you just need a quick place to rest and recharge - this isn't it. Have a great trip!

Thanks, It didn't seem that far off I95 but it must be.

We went over for 1 night in January after a day spent in Savannah, it was really nice, even for just one night. It isn't an hour from I-95, in fact, I don't think it was even a half hour.

We really enjoyed our 1 night stay. We were in the main building, just above the check in area overlooking the marsh. The Beach House was closed for refurb, but we found beach access elsewhere and stayed there for about 30 minutes and explored the rest of the island. Now, with that said, I wouldn't pay peak rates to stay there, we paid $110 for the one night we were there.

To get to the island, we took a backroad that our GPS sent us on from Savannah, it took maybe an hour, but when we left on Sunday morning and headed straight for the interstate, we made it to I-95 in no time, I was really surprised.

Mapquest is telling me its about 21 miles from I-95. So I guess an hour total to get there and to get back to 95.

we are DVC members and can use our points. that is one reason I was thinking about it instead of paying around $100 for somewhere decent along I-95.

It's never a function of the mileage, it's the traffic.

That was going to be my response. Sometimes the traffic backs up, especially where you enter the island. That 21 miles can easily take an hour.

We've stopped at HHI on the way home from Disney lots of times. We do it to extend our vacation. We usually stay 3 or 4 nights to recuperate from our Disney "vacation"!

How is it usually on a Saturday? It will be about late Satruday afternoon.

I've stayed at Disney's HHI resort multiple times. It's a nice resort, but I wouldn't recommend it as a "travel stop." There is only one road onto the island, and if traffic is bad, it can take at least an hour to travel just a few miles. I've been during busy seasons when traffic is bumper to bumper, and it's agony traveling at a snail's pace when we've already been on the road for hours.

My vote would be to pick a hotel near the interstate for this trip. If you want to check out the HHI resort, make it a vacation destination for three or four nights, depending upon what you like to do. HHI has great golf courses and fabulous restaurants, and the shopping can be fun. The Disney resort has a few family activities, but it's not a jam-packed schedule like you would find at WDW.

The traffic can be horrendous on the weekend. It could take the better part of an hour on a Saturday. The highway is not a 2 lane; it is a 4-6 lane road.

Saturday afternoon is the worst possible time.

ALL the vacation rentals on the island turn over on Saturday with a check in time of 4:00

Getting from 95 to the island could take an hour and a half or more.

Exactly! It took well more than two hours on one of our trips.
