Has there ever been a shark encounter or attack at the Disney Hilton Head Island beach or around The island? This question might have been thought up based on current shark week programming 😋.

Last May we went to Disney's HHI resort. We got to the beach and everyone was out of the water. We were like 'what is going on?'. We sat there a bit and sunned and wondered. Then we heard folks talking about a boy who got bit by a shark the day before.

Needless to say, we stayed pretty much out of the water that trip. Just went ankle deep and sat in beach chairs at the edge.

Neither sharks nor alligators can keep me away from HHI DVC Resort hahah - 16 days and counting. But seriously, alligators are also an issue so just a heads up - there are signs everywhere to be cautious in the marsh.

Oh yeah. But there are few beaches(if any) where someone hasn’t had an encounter.
Wow thanks for the info. We’re currently on property and the last couple of days the water has been really muddy and got all stirrred up from a storm offshore. Due to sharks poor eyesight I don’t want to be accidentally mistaken for prey.

I didn’t see if the article mentioned the type of shark ? Perhaps a little nurse shark? Last year my brother in law was fishing just from the beach at the Disney vero beach resort and kept catching two foot nurse sharks. His line was roughly 20-30 feet out

We definitely saw a gator 🐊 in the river/channel 2 years ago along the bicycle path in palmetto dunes when we were riding our bikes to the beach one evening around 5pm. He was full blown mature size too, just casually swimming

9 days for us...woo hoo. Love it too!! We were there earlier this month and jelly fish were a problem. Still love it. In fact this upcoming trip is to look at a quarter share condo in Shelter Cove so we can be there 13 weeks a year.

Blacktip shark...I read.

Also, my DH and DDs went on fishing charter once, in HH, and they caught a bunch of sharks. That's pretty much all they caught (and 1 big stingray).

Hi! 9 days for us too but we won't be staying at DVC. We own a fixed week three bedroom at Waterside by Spinnaker down the street from Coligny Plaza.

Cannot wait!

Yes jellyfish are a problem still. 4 to 5 people got stung 2 days ago while we were at the beach. Mostly kids. We have a newborn and stayed in the little tide pools but I’ll take my chances and get soaked every now and then

We're staying in Harbourside III this time and not DVC. To try it and see if we want to buy (it's a quarter share). I have a stay booked at the Disney resort for my mom and I at the end of the month. We will probably go to Frosty Frog one of the days this trip. I also have 2 new places booked for dinner and want to decide which one....Michael Anthony's and Bluffton Brauhaus (Italian or German). ANd DH wants to try (again...we have tried 2 other times but the wait was way too long) Skull Creek Boathouse.

Ahhhh, Frosty Frog is our first night tradition.
We drive the 12 hours from New York next Friday and make our way to Frosty Frog that evening for drinks, drinks, drinks and dinner. Waterside is down the street so we can walk, yey!

This is where I have us eating:

FishCamp on Broad Creek
Chow Daddys
The Black Marlin Bayside Grill
Somewhere in Harbortown
Crazy Crab
Hudsons

See you on the Island!

We saw a MASSIVE gator over in Sea Pines on our way to Harbour Town this 4th of July weekend, at the pond right next to the horse stables. It must have been a 8-9 footer. Just sitting on the banks in plain view of the road.

Im much more freaked out about flesh eating bacteria than I am sea life though.

We just did Crazy Crab earlier this month and it was really good. I got some peach arnold palmer booze drink that was very good. And DH and I shared a crab leg boil...mmmmmm. Maybe we'll do Frosty Frog on Friday night, the 9th and see you there.

PM me if you are there and I will send a picture of us so we can spot each other and we can toast our vacations!

We owned back-to-back quarters at HBS3 for about 6 years. The back-to-back allowed us 6 (month long) stays each each year and 2 weeks in January. We had 2 different units (both above San Miguels) so we had to move once each trip, but it worked really well. We eventually sold those and bought a condo (also at Shelter Cove) and ended up getting rid of the condo and buying home a little north on the island - so be aware what you may be getting yourself into! :teeth:

Enjoy your stay at HBS3!

Jeff Corwin said the other day that no matter where you are in the ocean, there are sharks not too far away from you.

Stay off the Loop at Shark Valley in the Everglades. Unless you are in the tram. There are gators all over the place where people are walking. Drove me nuts.

For the flesh eating bacteria. Just stay out of the water if you have an open sore or cut. And don't swallow the water.
