Actually, starting in mid to late November, the weather can turn cool enough to use the fireplace. That cool to occasional cold weather generally extends to early to mid-March. That being said, I've seen folks light the fire in the GVs as early as September and as late as April. If you need extra wood just call the front desk and they'll have a housekeeping assistant or custodian run some up to you. And when I say up, I mean all 30+ stairs. There will be firewood in a half barrel that sits outside the door to the GV already, but some people, ahem, burn right through that supply and call for more. There is already a fire making kit--which consists of starter "wood" and a propane lighter--in the room.

Some do, though not nearly as many some years ago. HHI is largely a year-round destination now, and the restaurants have mostly adjusted to that. Some of the smaller venues may close for several weeks, and even some of the more well-known eateries will close for a few weeks to refurb, repaint, and give their staff time off. However, even during the depth of winter, most restaurants are open anymore, though perhaps with more limited days and hours. Regardless, you won't go hungry on the island for want of good restaurants. As you imply, it is wise, certainly, to check on availability of a particular restaurant before you go.

Since it's a beach resort, is there a lot to do during the winter? I never even considered going here in the winter, but sounds like a good time!

You won’t want to get in the ocean but Disney heats the pools so unless it’s too cold outside (I think their limit is 50F) the pools will be open. Plus most everything on the island is open year round these days. Some places still close in the off season but not as many as years ago.

January and February are more likely to be "cold enough" for a fire, but then again, "cold enough" varies by where you're coming from. We live on the Texas Gulf Coast, so we might turn on our fireplace when those guys from the Northeast US are running around in t-shirts!

It's funny-we live down in the Valley of Texas, so as hot as you, so I'm right there with you. Yet, 30 years ago when we lived up in Massachusetts, we were the ones running around in t-shirts, playing in the swimming pool, while the local life guards sat in their winter coats, shivering, and shaking their heads at us. Now we're shivering too! We can tell "Winter Texans" on the golf courses-they're the ones in shorts and t-shirts, while DH has his long pants and a jacket. We'd probably be OK with the fireplace at HHI any November as well as the winter months.
