OK, so yes, it was a cap. (No fair Brenda, you are a professional

) I have never had my hair highlighted at the salon before so I was a bit nervous and thought the cap sounded like it would be more subtle, plus it was a lot less expensive.
I color my hair myself with L'Oreal and use 'Light Brown' or 'Light Ash Brown', which is my natural color. Perhaps the picture makes my hair look lighter than it really is, because I am light brown, but now I have some cool new highlights!
Sorry about that!

Saphire, I think your hair looks beautiful! I really do. Please, you sound like you are apologizing for using the cap--don't. I have had both used on my hair and you know what? I choose to keep using the cap also! It is not worth her time and my time and $$$ for the foils. She does not charge me but I pay her. I felt like I needed to give her like triple for those foils but the results were not worth triple to me.
Foils are wonderful for long hair, hair that you want to use several different colors for (like S.C. minnie, I believe, said she did) and even when the hair is naturally a certain color and you want it to be another color --foils can give better results.
While both can get royally screwed up, I see more bad foil jobs than cap jobs. And BTW, a cap should not hurt. Caps have come a l-o-n-g way since those rubbers beanie type things of the 80's!
As home haircolor gets better and better, slaon professionals need to keep clients more and more faithful--esp. in these hard economic times. People are wanting to cut costs and hairdressers are trying to make a living. We are taught to do things in a way that you will not feel like you could duplicate it at home (think bottle vs. brush and bowl for color, foils vs. cap). These companies that are coming out with some of these wonderful home coloring kits are the same ones making some of the professional products also (think Clairol, L'Oreal and parent companies also). They are making $$ off both because they know people have always done their hair at home and always will.
Some processes call for a pro and some can be done (maybe not very easily) at home. Trying to correctly color your hair at home --applying it to your new growth in the back-- is not an easy task w/o the help of a friend.
But to say one is outdated etc. etc. is just wrong because it is not. It may or may not give a better desired result, it takes a pro to actually do it (one could not foil at home), and it makes the pro more $$$. If you are doing an all over color plus highlights, it makes more sense to foil within the salon. Doing it like you did (all over color at home) and going in and having it highlighted is perfectly fine and it looks great!
This is just my opinion, worth nothing to most but oh well, it is a BB, I'm allowed.
