Highlighting colored hair?

I've been coloring my hair for years and was thinking of getting it highlighted. Is this a lot of upkeep? How often would I have to get my hair touched up with high lights and do they charge the same as having your full head highlighted? I'm not a very high maintenance person and if it's a lot of expense or upkeep I might just try doing my hair a different shade. Thanks for any info. Linda :)

I prefer highlights over all over color because of the fact that they are much more forgiving when they grow out. Depending on how much lighter the highlights are than your base color and how heavy they are applied you could get away with doing them every 6 months or more. My highlights I like to have done about every 3 to 4 months.

At my salon we charge $95 for a full foil which is foils over your whole head. And it's $75 for a partial which includes the crown, front and sides. Everywhere is different of course. Some salons will even charge a price per foil if you wanted to get away with less more targeted foils.

Good luck. If you get it done alwasy ask that it start off more subtle. It is easier to do more than it is to do less.

I used to color my own hair but hated the line down the middle when it started to grow out. Now I get foils done every 3 months (10-12 weeks) at a cost of $110 for full foil and $90 for partial. I do a full one time and a partail the next. I have three shades foiled in on my natual hair color, which includes a lot of greys. I love the way this looks and I am not a high maintenance person but this I will continue to do! I would be concerned about highlighting colored hair because the full color is still going to grow out every 6-8 weeks and you would be coloring over the highlights.

I find the highlights are less upkeep. You didn't say but Im covering gray and my natural color is brown which is the color I use. The gray is much less noticable when it starts to grow out because of the highlights.
I get color and foil every 8 weeks. I don't do it myself because I just have a lot of hair and I get a pretty good deal. I don't know how I would foil my own head anyway but I know people do.

I've been getting highlight for the past 3 or 4 years. I have medium brown hair, and usually get them every 8 weeks. There is no way I could go 6 months between sessions! I've actually been growing them out for about 14 weeks right now, and my hair looks awful to me. (I want to color it all to a dark, chestnut brown before Christmas.)

My hairdresser works out of her home, so she only charges $36 for a haircut and highlights. I would never get them done if I had to go to a real salon -- even the Cost Cutters and Fantastic Sams want at least $70, if not much more, to highlight shoulder length hair.

I get partial highlights. I go every 3-4 months my hair is a dirty blonde so I get a light blonde and it blends well with my color and you really can't tell when it is grown out. I get highlights, cut and style for $62. I got a deal on Sunday and a friend of a friend did it free:woohoo: She was my hero!

Price and the time fram for hav'nt it redone seems to vary a lot. My hair is a medium brown and I color it a shade lighter to cover the greys. When my hair starts growing in after getting highlights won't the roots look bad like when I color it and the roots are growing in, since it is grey and a darker shade of brown than the colored hair? Thanks for all the replies! Linda :)

Typically what I would do with a client like you is aim for as natural as possible. I would go in with the foils of a lighter color, like the one you are coloring all over right now. And then I would alternate that with a darker brown similar to your natural color that is going to grow out. What keeps foiled/highlighted hair from looking like the roots need to be done as soon as all over color is the mixing in of the natural color. Plus the foils don't pick up all the hair on the head so it blends a lot better as it grows out. If you have a very high percentage of grey you may be better off doing a lighter highlight to blend in with the grey growing out. That is why many women go blonde as they get older. To blend in with the grey.

Hope that made sense.:rotfl:
