When it comes to high speed internet all things are local. People will say "OH CABLE IS SOOOO MUCH BETTER" or "DSL IS WAY BETTER" and that generally means they don't know what they are talking about. It depends on where you live. In some area's the cable is better, in some DSL. Cable is far more widely available so you might not have to make a choice at all. DSL is very limited.
If you have both available I would ask neighbors that live close what they use and how they like it. If that didn't help I would probably try DSL first because it is usually cheaper and then switch if it didnt' work well.
Forget satelite unless you have no other choice

So far my searching has come up with Comcast at $19.99 a month for 6 months but I must pay $3 a month to rent modem or $99 to buy it.

can cancel after 6 months but if I do not it goes up to $42.95 a month

still researching what BellSouth has to offer and will take your advice and go to a friends and see how hers is.

Thanks

I have Bellsouth DSL and at one time had Earthlink DSL. Bellsouth seems to go down alot. Everytime we call to find out whats going on they say oh we are adding more servers or something. Now I have been finding that even with the DSL my game play on VMK still gets very slow. I have been thinking it is my computers but they are really not old. :badpc:

Bellsouth DSL, all I know is that it is WAY faster than dial up. We paid for the modem, but then we did the rebate they had online and got it for free. If you sign up for Bellsouth's DSL, on line everything you have to pay for the set up will be refunded one way or another. Then they had the first three months for $9.99. But don't pay to have one their techs come out and hook it up, it is VERY easy to do it yourself.

My connection does slow down every now and then, but I have never had it go completly down. The slowness I am having I am sure is my computer, I need to add more memory.

for cable modem I usually recommend renting the modem. The reason is that if you have a problem and you own it they will try to blame it on your equipment. Since you it would take almost 3 years to pay back the purchase price I see no advantage to buying one.

My brother has DSL. I have cable (RoadRunner). My cable costs more, $47.47, compared to SBC Yahoo DSL, $30.something. I have never had a problem with cable, but he has had MANY problems with his DSL. We are in the Milwaukee, WI area.
Oh, I own my modem, got it on ebay for $60!(brand new). Never got to use it here (did in SD), I was forced to rent TimeWarner's modem. I see that's finally changing.
Definitely ask around. You may find DSL in your area is better than cable. Btw, imo ANYTHING is better than dial-up! ;)

There have been many posts regarding both DSL and CABLE high speed connections. These two options are definitely the better ones within Internet Service Provider industry, but are probably the only two options most of us have for high speed internet access. Comcast provides our broadband connection and runs rougly $45.95/month (I think...LOL). Testing my internet connection speed I was pulling roughly 3.5Mbps to 3.8Mbps, compared to a maximum speed through dial-up modem 56Kbps (.056Mbps compared to above cable modem, granted there are tools to double your dial-up speed). This means my cable modem speed is roughly 62.5 to 67.9 times faster than my dial-up modem. There are some gotcha's though around both cable modem and digital subscriber line (DSL). I highly recommend reading the following hyperlink from cnet http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6536_7-726601-1.html?tag=ft and after reading this hyperlink scroll to bottom of page to read these articles:

(1) The lowdown on DSL
(2) The inside skinny on cable

CNET's web site has definitely helped me make some technical decisions around purchasing certain components, and they usually have pretty good articles comparing products.

I concur with the no satellite vote. The connection, when it works, is not much faster than dialup, and the connection is really buggy. And if you are a gamer, do not ever get satellite, unless you want to be fragged all night long. Satellite connection is also a lousy way to play the fireworks game (and that is my excuse for not having the fireworks pin).
