High school wrestling tragedy.

oh man. as the mom of a wrestler that thought was always so scary.

The ref at my son's youth match yesterday started by informing us of the tragedy & asking for a moment of silence. Natuarlly I was deeply saddened for all involved.
Such injuries are extremely rare.
My next thought was to pack up my son and take him home. He's 10 but it is his first year wrestling. He never would have forgiven me.

My heart is breaking right now

My son is a wrestler and my husband is a Paramedic, you have no idea how many tmes he has been called to the mat. Nothing this bad of course.

Last year we had a young man hit his head on the floor ( they had gotten out of bounds) and he lost his memory . He had to be taught how to do normal things he had done for his whole life.
He is doing better right now but is still not himself.

My prayers go out to the parents of the yougn man who died .

How common is this sort of accident in wrestling? Surely it's very rare?

It's hard to watch your children play any kind of sport, especially at the hs/college level. They are just so determined to win and they don't always back down even when serious injury is possible. I remember so well my dd fighting it out on the soccer field and worrying that she would be injured or she would injure someone else.

Injuries happened during high school wrestling matches. A boy I went to high school with broke his arm during a match. It was a compound fracture. The break damaged the blood flow to his arm. He ended up having it amputated.

While the kids are taught how they should take down the opponents, things happen. Someone can slip or just exert to much pressure. It is a pretty rough sport.
