My daughter is trying out for high school freshman VOLLEYBALL, but so are 50other girls. In case she doesn't make it, we would like a fall-back sport for her to play. She enjoys tennis, but has only taken a 2 week course.

Does anyone know if tennis is competitive, or if a basic level girl can be in it? Believe it or not, but the school office didn't know! I can get in contact with the "coach" but I thought I would see if anyone knows much about tennis here on the DIS first.

Like I said, it would be a fall-back sport if volleyball doesn't work out. I don't want to sound too interested in tennis-just yet.

My DS was on the HS team last year...it is competetive and it depends on your school if it is a no-cut sport or not...I mean, if only 20 kids try out, they will all amke it and be needed just to fill the slots for Varsity/JV...however if you have over 60 ( like DS school) cuts need to be made or kids will not get to play. They go to conference, district state...get scouted, just like any other sport here in Illinois. Kids practice everyday, girls are usually fall, boys spring.

Depends on the school. Where I attended, it was pretty competitive. I could have made the team, but then again I played tennis every summer and took private lessons since I was 5.

Other schools may be different.

It really depends on the school but someone that has only played tennis for 2 weeks would probably NOT make most high school teams. I would suggest she go out for cross country. It is one sport where EVERYONE can make the team and everyone competes at all meets.

It all really depends on how popular tennis is in your area. Public schools tend to have less competitive programs than private schools. But if your school is located in an area with upper middle class families, then those public schools tend to have good teams as well. These are solely are observations from my experience playing in high school.

Another thing to keep in mind is at least in FL, only the top 5 girls played in matches. We had over 10 girls on the team, so not everyone actually played in matches against other schools. Our top 3 was set in stone and our coach would shuffle who would play in the 4 and 5 spots based on the level of competition we'd be facing.

Not always-around here the public schools rule in tennis, and most sports for that matter.
