High School ROTC Program.??..

I know this isn't "budget" - but didn't know where else to ask. My DGS joined the ROTC program at his High School yesterday in Florida. I goggled it, but most of the information I found is geared to college students. Can anyone here tell me something about the program? Or point me in the direction of some information? I'm very proud of him....and his Daddy is AF...is is deploying again for the 4th time! T - Barb

I think it's actually JR (as in Junior) ROTC. Here's a link to the army one:

What type of information are you looking for? This is my DS second year in the Air Force jr ROTC program at his school. He really loved it last year, even made "1st Class Cadet of the Year."

I was just wondering what it all consisted of....and what he'll be doing. I did look at the rotc site...but it didn't say to much about what they did...or anything. It sounds like a wonderful program!!
He's the oldest of 7 and only has one younger brother- and it's been a struggle for him with his Dad gone so very much lately in AFGH the past few years.. (besides moving across country twice).....His Dad is wonderful...and he adores him - but the poor child needs so much guidance. Yesterday they cut his long hair...I didn't think he'd EVER let anyone do that. I am so proud of him for doing this and want it to work so badly for him.
Whatever you can tell me will be 100% more than I know right now..

bunny ~ Yes we are very proud of him. He was quite shocked when they called his name at the banquet.

My DS too got his hair cut to meet standards. He loves having longer hair, and grew it out when he was done last year. (He only had ROTC for the first semester, the second semester was Health. This is how it is broken up at his school for the Freshman.)

So, I'll share what they do at my son's school. Maybe your son's school has a website and have info on it as well.

Classroom instruction is broken done as follows,

40% Leadership Training
40% Aerospace Studies
20% Physical Fitness/Drill

They have one day in uniform and one day for fitness/drill.

Course Overview The Air Force Junior ROTC program provides citizenship training and an aerospace science program for high school students. The curriculum is a balance of 40 percent aerospace science and 40 percent leadership education, and 20% physical fitness. Classes are taught by retired Air Force commissioned and non-commissioned officers. Classroom study includes the heritage of flight and navigation, aerospace vehicles, rocketry, propulsion, space travel, and aviation careers. Students are also introduced to military customs and courtesies, flag etiquette, basic drill and ceremonies, management, human relations, and communications. Many military-related field trips are included in the program. There is a community service component which helps instill a sense of civic pride and leadership. Additionally, weekly Air Force style uniform wear and grooming standards apply.

One activity that they did outside of school was to go to an old Air Force base near here and clean the outside of the planes. They also did several events at the home football games (ran concessions) and did numerous food/clothe/toy drives.

His ROTC unit was elected as one of 95 units (out of 879) to receive a Distinguished Unit with Merit Award. They also were awarded overall unit assessment score of “Exceeds Standards” (the highest rating possible) during an inspection by the Headquarters Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.
