High School Ring Question

I think I wore my hs ring for all of a month! Even my college ring (and I went to a fairly small private college and have been an active alum) was only worn until shortly after I graduated.

You might want to think about a really nice signet ring or some such thing. In my dh's family, the boys all get gorgeous, hand-made signet rings modeled after a very old one in the family. Both my dh and his brother have been wearing theirs for more than 30 years. My fil seldom wears rings but will on occasion sport his signet ring.

I didn't buy a high school ring, didn't want one. DH has one and it's sitting somewhere in his desk drawer.

Class rings are a pretty big deal at my son's school. They get them their sophomore year and they have a big presentation ceremony that goes along with getting the ring. I paid for my son's ring and he upgraded quite a bit from the basic model. Yes, it was expensive, but I was glad to do it.

DD is a sophmore and just got her class ring in Nov. It was around $400 and we didn't do any upgrades. She chose the designs and everything and wears it everyday so far. We were happy to pay for the ring since it seems like such an accomplishment to stay in main stream high school these days!

High school rings were a big deal at my school. I have to say I have worn quite a few guys high school rings in my day. SSSHHHHH!!! Don't say anything to DH. LOL!!!!

Anyways, when a guy and girl would start going "steady" rings were exchanged in my day {I'm only 33}.

The last high school ring I ever wore was DH's. I stopped wearing it when he decided to upgrade it to an engagement ring. ;)

My mom bought my ring when I was a freshman and I wore it all through high school unless a boyfriend had it.

We picked up dd's HS ring the other night....It took about a month to come in from the time of ordering. We ordered it at the Walmart jewelry counter....It has the stone she wanted, her activities, school colors on the side, name engraved on the side of the ring and her name and grad year engraved inside....All for under 100.00. :cool1:

When they get to college, those rings will go in a drawer somewhere never (or rarely) to be seen again. Go post the question over on the College board and see who is still wearing theirs.

I remember with my class ring my parents offered to pay for the cheapest ring. Since I had a job if I wanted a nicer one it was up to me to pay the difference. I did upgrade my ring.

Same here. Mom & Dad paid for the basic (I think it was a whopping $80 back then) and I kicked in the additional $140 to get the 14k, stone-ism I wanted, etc. I wore it all though high school, and then put it away in a box when I started as an undergrad -- to me it seemed so "geeky" to hang on to something from High School when I was clearly attempting to move on with my life. Anyway, I boxed it up ... somewhere... Since that was around 22 years ago (yikes) I have no real idea where it currently exists...

They both have jobs and can afford them themselves. I don't know what to do. I am more inclined to talk them out of it. Did your teen purchase their school ring?

You have your answer in front of you. If they can afford them, let them buy them.

For the record I didn't get one, dh didn't even graduate from HS...I suspect my Freshman will not want one either. We moved and she is not "tied" to this school.

We never got college rings or pic's either. I did buy the yearbook 1 year. Now THAT I could kick myself for. I should have bought that every year.

Two of my three sons wanted a ring so we tied it in with it being a Christmas gift but even with that they still had to pay a portion.

My dad INSISTED on getting me a class ring when I graduated from college (Univ. of Tenn.). Nothing else would do for him - that was my entire graduation gift. Big, bulky, tacky ring. Starving student, with a young wife - the money for a month's worth of groceries would have been a better idea. But that's a different story...

I really tried to wear the graduation ring - but my main exercise regimen has been lap swimming so the skin under the ring would stay chronically waterlogged - the ring kept my ring finger skin wet 24/7 if I wasn't careful. Even day-to-day handwashing required a LOT of drying. My wedding band is a lot more slender and I've never had a problem with it.

I think I've worn it a grand total of about a month's worth of days (30 or so). The only time I've taken my wedding band off is when my kids want to read the inscription. I graduated from UT 12 1/2 years ago. My wife & I celebrated 15 years of marriage last May. Guess which ring means more to me?
