Help!

My son wants to join football. He is currently 5'7 and 100 pounds. Yep. Tall and skinny, just like his dad was.

We are trying to bulk him up a bit, as he is self-conscious about his weight. He is starting Taekwando next month, and will be using the weight room as well afterwards (lessons are at the YMCA).

Anyone have a tall, thin kid in football? He will be a Freshman in September, and this would be his first year ever playing. There is a football camp in August where he will learn the basics.

I am worried about his current height/weight ratio being an issue. We are hoping he can gain a bit of weight over the summer.

lots of protein and healthy carbs! Protein assists in the muscle build and the carbs are necessary to support the protein as he exersizes. I know kids who have used ensure for snaks-chocolate, frozen with bananas and blended into a shake.

I can tell you that if he has a high metabolism, it will be difficult for him to put on weight. However, he will probably play freshman ball next year and will learn techniques on how to use his size to his advantage (i.e. quickness).

My son is going to play football for the 1st time next year in high school also. Although, he's 6' 180 lbs. But there are disadvantages to being big also (littler kids can use his balance point against him, not very fleet of foot, etc).

Good luck!!

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog!!

If he wants to play bad enough he will do whatever is asked to play. Not everyone is huge on the football field.

Sense he is a freshman, don't worry to much. If the coaches are worth anything they will tell him exactly what he needs to do to bulk up. Lots os skinny tall and short fat kids in freshman ball.

Weights, weights and more weights. Four days per week. Two days on, one day off, two days on, two days off, with a proper regimen. He will have to be very committed, no one can do if for him. Unless his genetics just won't allow he could put on 50 lbs in the next year. I have done it and know guys who have done more.

Find out who does the conditioning for the program and see if they are currently training athletes. Your son will want to get busy now with conditioning, as the position basics and getting used to wearing the gear will slow him down in the Fall. If he goes into football, there won't be much time for any other activities.

I was reading over the paperwork for football and OMG! He would need to start weight training at the high school TODAY, and we would need to cancel all summer plans : 2 day Great Wolf Lodge trip, YMCA week-long summer camp, guitar lessons, and Taekwando lessons.

I told him all of that and he said "Forget it".

At least we got that figured out before we signed him up.
