High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

We have been eating for "free" the last few days. DD has 50 meal swipes left and less than a week to use them. Luckily we are close so we have met her for dinner and lunch so far. Will fit in a few more meals over the next week. Might as well save on my grocery bill so I can pay for next semester! She only started with 160, not sure what she has been eating. I think she just forgets to eat sometimes.

I remember that when dd20 was a freshman! She'd come home for breaks with tons of food! Ds18 is on an unlimited plan.

I don't know how this happened but DD is bringing home a friend. Then another friend is flying in for a couple of days. Then a third friend is joining us after Christmas. My Niece also has 2 out of state friends visiting us during the same period (not at the same time thankfully). I am going to have a house full of girls. I was hoping for a nice, quiet family time, but no. Yes, I know I could have said no to all of this, but I'm really kind of looking forward to a busy house as well as dreading it.

My DD also told me this morning she was planning some get-togethers here with her friends during break!

My daughter's friends came over Thanksgiving weekend, five stayed over, two more visited during the day. It was busy and a bit crowded, but a lot of fun. They're going to get together over the winter break also, but not at our house this time.

DD has her plans made for New Years eve (her friend's family hosts a sleepover for all their friends every NYE). So she is really looking forward to seeing all her friends then. They did a sleepover on Thanksgiving weekend too since everyone was home from school. She and her roommates are also having a holiday party at the dorm on Thursday night before they all head home. So she will get to celebrate with both groups :)

Ugh, I just paid her tuition for Spring (at least I hope I am paying the right amount). I don't understand why they can't apply the scholarship before tuition is due instead of afterwards. It seems funny to have a bill for $x and only pay $y because I have to figure out the credits she will be receiving from school (scholarship plus health insurance waiver, etc). It would be nice if that stuff was applied before tuition is due so that the balance due is really the amount I have to pay ;)

Thanksgiving weekend here was pretty quiet with only one friend coming over. We used the time to hit a bunch of doctors' offices (Everyone was open Friday) and rest.
Winter break looks like it will be extremely hectic.

Our bill for Spring came yesterday. I can't figure out why it's $400 more than for fall. Anyway, since DD was making noises earlier in the semester about not going back, I am not paying anything yet. I will need to have a good sit-down talk with her about how not taking care of her physical health has an enormous effect on her mental health.

They did take the scholarship off in her bill, so I guess different schools do it differently.

Haha, we called them strays. My daughter used to bring them home all the time, it was so much fun. You'll enjoy it.

Well, my son is coming home this afternoon, a day earlier than previously expected.

So his sister has very little time before school this morning to get his room back in shape-- he's a whole lot neater than she is.

Yesterday, at pretty much the last minute, I figured out what to get him besides clothes (and money): An Amazon Dot, just like his dad is getting. I paid a little extra to ensure that it's delivered by the 23rd. But I figure he'll get a kick out of it.

Can't wait till my whole family is under one roof again.

That is what we are getting my son this year too! It was so hard to come up with ideas, especially since he needs to fly his stuff back to school after winter break!

She's home! Yay, for a whole month we're a family of five again:) That's my Christmas present this year!

Does anyone have any advice about the best way to sell textbooks?

Mine is a senior this year, but he's back (across pretty treacherous slick roads with my husband) and we're finally family of 5 again as well! Ours is taking on a different feel though since I think by this time next year he'll likely be out on his own.

My son has done well selling textbooks to friends around him at school directly. But most of the kids at his school have a similar major, so it's probably easier for him. He has also sold some on Amazon and done fine with that.

Thank you, I think I'll have her try selling directly to other students, the quote I got online was not even worth selling them back!

Enjoy your time together!

Our bill for Spring came yesterday. I can't figure out why it's $400 more than for fall.

They did take the scholarship off in her bill, so I guess different schools do it differently.

Tuition difference- maybe you paid a deposit when she was accepted? We had a credit of $575 for fall semester because of the enrollment and housing deposits.

At DD's school, they take off the scholarship $$ and loan $$ from the total, too- we don't have to do any calculations.

Tuition for spring was due on the 12th- we are all paid up!

You're right. It was the deposit. DD is home but she still has a 15 page paper to finish (research done, but not really started writing). It's due Tuesday morning, but she's sleeping. She really needs to sleep.

DD is home also. Dad picked her up Friday, and they made it home in time for a family Christmas party at my cousin's house. (I had to work.) It sounded like one of those Christmases that will go down in the family history: a car hit an electric pole (no injuries)at the entrance to their street, which broke the pole and dropped power lines across the road. They had power just long enough for dinner, but it was out for the entire evening while repairmen replaced the pole and got the wires back up. So, no lights on the tree, no music, no heat, but plenty of candles and cell phone lights, laughter and warm bodies to keep things cozy. lol. I'm bummed I missed it.
She's definitely catching up on her zzzzzs since she got home. It sounds like that last week was a doozy with a lot of late nights. She's pretty sure she's got a 4.0, but not all the grades are posted yet, so we'll see. She sold all her books to students on campus and got a better return than any other option she checked into. Her phone died at the start of finals week so we've already paid a visit to Verizon and her new phone is one it's way. That was bad timing. It is hard to manage when a cell phone dies and the campus rooms do not have phones in them... so we were planning her pickup through FB message and her friend's phone, which was a pain. But at least we're getting the problem solved while she's home.
We're going to pay off spring semester today, and look into the remaining textbooks she needs for spring.
DS has three more days of school, DH works until Friday, and I work two more nights this week. She's baking with grandma and her cousin Thusday, and hopefully she'll fit in some visits with friends from home during this week, so we can enjoy the holiday as a family over a long Christmas weekend.

Merry Christmas everyone and I hope you have a great visit with your young adults!!!

Well, I had DD home for the weekend and then said goodbye to her again last night. But it is all good, my kids are driving with my Mom to my sister's today and DH and I will join them all on Friday (no sense having them sit at home alone while DH and I are working this week). They have plans made with their cousins already. DD said she was so relaxed since it was the first time since elementary school that she doesn't have any school work to do over the holiday (our schools start late and the semester ends in January so she always had some project to work on during that time). :)

I hope you all have wonderful holidays!!!!

We too are a a family of 5 again. Drove Friday to pick her up after working 1/2 day. Dashed back in time for a family dinner out before seeing Rogue One. Both girls had friends over Saturday (so my son was depressed until he invited a friend over too LOL). Weather turned nasty, so 5 of the kids spent the night-full house with 8 kids in the house (all teens except the boys-who eat enough to make up for it). The college girls baked cutout cookies, then decorated them. Somehow the "angel" cookies turned into movie characters (Lara Croft, Jessica Rabbit, Belle, Ariel). Then the power went out at 6 am on Sunday morning-during the cold snap (negative wind chills) and was out til ~1pm. Thank goodness for fireplace and gas stove (was able to make pancakes for the crowd, and potato soup for lunch). The girls and friends played board games in front of fireplace and the boys dashed around in basement fighting sith and the Empire (although at one point I think they were on empire side too LOL). Other than worrying about when electricity would go on again it was nice to NOT have the option of all just staring at a screen. College DD was out last night too-another of her HS friends moms makes tons of sugar cookies, then has all the kids over to decorate-has turned into a yearly tradition. We will also have a "stray" staying with us next week. I think my DD and her friend are going to hang out in their favorite teachers room at the HS tomorrow...

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Season's Greetings, Happy Holidays and Happy Festivus (for the rest of us!)

Paper is finished!!! She sent it to my older daughter to edit and is going out with local friends tonight. She promised to be home early so she can wake up, incorporate her sister's edits and submit it before the noon deadline. I'm feeling much better. I read the paper and she will not fail (frankly, I don't think she'll even go below a B. It's really surprisingly good considering it was a last minute effort.)
