Hi everyone! Me and the Hubby are driving to Orlando for this year's trip, and were wondering if there are any hidden gems along the way that we should check out! We are in Charlotte and will spend most of the trip on I95 in the south...if anyone has any suggestions, we'd love to hear them! :cool1:

What type of gems? How far off of I-95 is reasonable?

I think 5-10 miles is reasonable...looking for restaurants, photo opportunities, must sees...that sort of thing! :confused3

First off their is an exit by exit thing here on the dis someplace. And on the TRANSPORTATION board you might get some better advice.

We drive down often and our favorite stop is Savannah.*we tried The Crab Shack this year and it was great fun.

Thanks! I actually did a search before posting this thread and didn't find anything like that...I'll have to check again! :thumbsup2

If you only do one thing, do this.

Go to Skipper's Fish Camp in Darien, GA. It's not far at all off 95 (there will be signs for it). At the exit ramp take a right and essentially follow your nose to the water. Take another right and the camp (truly a very nice restaurant, not a scruffy camp at all) will be on the left at the water's edge.

It is the single best place for real food that I have EVER eaten. True deep south. Fresh fish, fresh shrimp (they catch them right there!) collard and 'que to die for... seriously. GO!

"Where the elite eat in their bare feet!";)

The Crab shack is about 25 miles from I95. Keep going another 3 miles and you can go to the beach.

There is a giant 7 Up can along SB I95-right around Jacksonville, I think. It's our half way point so it's around 150 miles from Savannah.

I wish I could remember the name of this restaurant we went to in SC last year but I don't right now. It was a cajun-style restaurant that must be a chain because I seemed to remember it being advertised at almost each exit. I REALLY want some more of their shrimp and grits!!! YUM!!!

St. Augustine has some great shopping at the outlet mall on the right side as you are going down to Orlando. There are outlet malls on each side but the one on the left has a lot of high end stores but there is a Disney Outlet there... Although I love to go there for the shopping, I also love to go to St. Augustine for the history part and the carriage rides.

Daytona has the track, the dog track (now that was a fun trip!!), and a restaurant called Hog Heaven. It's a BBQ place that we ate at for our wedding day dinner. We eloped to Daytona and ate there across from our hotel room because it was our favorite restaurant. ;)

I love South Of The Border. It sets the world standard for tacky!

We like this book for just this type of info when driving from Maryland to Florida. Drive I 95

Thanks...I might have to check that out!

That sounds quite yummy!

Does anyone know what would be a good halfway point between Charlotte and Orlando? I figured some place in Georgia.

Is this a place called "Pedros South of the Border?" They were talking about this place on the radio...sounds interesting?!?!? :confused3

* I just looked at a map and that's a little out of our way...we're gonna be hitting 95 off of Route 26 between Charleston and Savannah. *

I think the word interesting is too strong for South of the Border. And yes, its the same place as Pedro's. You won't be able to miss the signs. We stop there every time we drive and its actually gotten a little cleaner if you can believe it. :lmao:

And we have actually re-named it "Tacky Town". :lmao: Go and enjoy. It's worth the stop just to say that you've been there!!

IN Jacksonville, actually. It's the Southeast Atlantic Beverage company. They bottle all sorts of things for distribution in the southeast - various sodas, Sobe drinks, etc. They're about 3 miles south of the river on I-95 on the right hand side if you're going south just past the University Blvd exit. :thumbsup2

Whilst in the Jacksonville area we have a very nice zoo just a few miles off of I-95 on the north side of the river. :) www.jaxzoo.org

I like Mrs. Wilkes in Savannah for lunch.

The food is good and the price is very reasonable for what you get. It's all you can eat and served family style.

We met people from all over while waiting on line and at our table.

Stay away from Paula Deen's restaurant. The food is mediocre at best.
