Hicks on Holiday 4:MODERATOR - please move to trip reports

Travel Day #1

Somehow, after months of waiting, and a week of panicked packing,
the Hicks found themselves at Disney Trip Eve.
We packed the last few things, loaded the big suitcases in the van,
and went to bed somewhat early.
The alarm was set for 3 am, with hopes of being on the road by 4.

We have a theory that if you leave really early,
you beat a lot of traffic,
and the children will sleep for the first few hours.
The first thought almost always proves to be true,
and the second almost always is false.
Once my kids are awake, they’re awake.

I was up before the alarm and showered, which really woke me up.
We had made some peanut butter toast the night before,
to take in the van, which is part of our “Motion Sickness Prevention Plan.”
The Chef also takes motion sickness meds, and last time, I also gave the youngers a dose of benedryl.
Since I couldn't remember who had been sick before, I skipped that step this time.
That decision would become a bit of an egregious oversight.

But I digress.

When I started loading the last minute stuff into the van that morning, I could hear thunder in the distance.
We hurried to get everyone moving,
but by the time we were loading them in the van it was really raining.
Not a good start.

I had mapped out a route that would take us down through IL,
then swing over to KY,
then head across TN for our first night’s stop in Chattanooga.
I had checked the GPS to make sure it concurred,
and was satisfied that it did.
That morning, either due to John heading the wrong direction to begin with,
or the GPS being a bit goofy, it started sending us to Chicago.
We drive through Chicago ALL THE TIME to visit relatives.

In the words of the You Tube All-Star “Ain’t NOBODY got time for that!”

I grabbed the GPS, and typed in my super sneaky end run around its programming…Peru, IL.
Lately, when travelling to MI, we avoid Chicago and current construction by heading to Peru, then changing our destination mid-route to MI.
It works.
We end up on 80 east, and go from there.
I tried this again, only changing mid-route to Chattanooga.
It worked again.
After that first few minutes of travel stress, the trip got much smoother.
Because it was Labor Day Weekend, there was no active construction going on.

Here are some of the highlights of our first day--

Interesting site #1...Gigantic Cross along the highway in IL:

Somewhere deep in the interior of IL, Babycakes (dd7), started feeling sick.
Her toast didn't sit well (she doesn't do peanut butter, so had just butter).
She wasn't too bad, and I was thankful that it was only ONE kid feeling quesy...one trip it was THREE.

Once she got lunch in her she was fine.

IHOP off of 24 in Paducah, KY. Highly recommend!
We ate at three different IHOPs this trip, and this one was the best.
[What can I say...we like IHOP.]

Mountains ahead!

At Nashville we encountered a big traffic jam.
It was people heading to the Univ KY vs. W. KY football game. WOWSER, those are some serious fans!
Onward to Chattanooga:

12 hours in the van is a LONG time.

Beware the falling rocks!!!

Getting closer to Chattanooga!

Hard to see, but on 24 you dip into GA for 5 minutes before coming back into TN.

We finally arrived at Comfort Inn and Suites - Lookout Mountain, in Chattanooga.
We stay here every trip, and highly recommend it. Free breakfast is a plus!
We had our usual first night meal at the nearby Cracker Barrel...also a favorite.

We then told the kids to go to bed early, because we were exhausted and wanted an early start in the morning.
The quicker we leave TN, the quicker we will get to DISNEYWORLD!!!

Next up:
Georgia on my mind...does this state NEVER end???

I'd love to follow along! I read your other trip reports from years ago. Your family is awesome, your kids are adorable, they have grown so much.

The shirt that you made for your son is so cool. You are talented, did you make any other clothing for the trip?

I have one child and I finally got to take him to Disney for the first time last year. I'm hoping to take him back in the next few years, until then, I'll have to enjoy other people's trip reports.

I get a kick out of reading how many items of clothing you need to pack for so many people, how many shorts, shirts, etc. I love packing but I can only imagine the stress in packing for so many people.

It must be awesome to see the reactions on all of your children's faces during your trips. I can't wait to hear more about it. You are off to a great start already.

Thanks! Glad to see you again. This trip was a long time coming...can't believe it's over already. I did make several things. I'll try to remember to point them out in the pics. :goodvibes

I have not forgotten about this report...it's been soccer season and time has been a premium. I'll be back to post more soon!

Wishing the moderators would move it for me! Anyway...back soon! :wizard:

I'm working on a long overdue update, but I'm bumping this up so a moderator will see it and move it to trip reports.
Hope to have my update up soon!

Travel Day #2

Day two began bright and early in Chattanooga…because there was free breakfast to be had!
Let me be brutally honest here…we have eight kids.
While on the road we only stay at hotels with free breakfast.
It just makes life a lot easier.

The staff at the Comfort Inn and Suites Lookout Mountain is always friendly and helpful.
And we like the waffles. Nom nom nom…

I always try to get on the road earlier this second day, because…I want to get to Disney. Quickly.
BUT…free breakfast doesn't start till 7 am on the weekend.
And, when we are done eating, we all need to use the restroom.
It takes a while.

We finally loaded into the van, and we were on our way.

The main thing between us and Disney is GEORGIA.
And in Georgia is Atlanta.

Since our move to WI, we drive in Chicago a lot…which we do not like doing.
But Atlanta is a special kind of driving challenge unto itself.
We learned on our last trip to get in the diamond lane and stay there.
Now we have a GPS…and GPS doesn’t direct you to the diamond lane.
After a few miles of trying to follow the GPS,
John finally ignored her bossy voice and got in the diamond lane.
WHEW. It is SO much better there.

Atlanta in all her glory:

Having made it through Atlanta and a few miles further down 75, it was time for lunch.
We stopped at IHOP in Adel, GA.
We actually have been to this one several times…it is easy to find and easy to get to…right off the exit.
If you are ever in Adel, GA, we recommend it.

Hey, don’t judge us that we ate at IHOP again…it’s a varied menu. ;)

We have a contest every trip to see who can spot the first palm tree.
I always win, because I know where it is. LOL
[For the record, it’s at a motel, near I-75, somewhere around Valdosta.]

The best part of day two is when you start seeing signs for FL.

I always feel like…if we can JUST get to FL, we’ll almost be there.
Truth is, once you cross the border, you still have to drive several hours.
But as long as I can hold onto my delusion, I do.

We always try to stop at the FL welcome center…but this time…we didn’t need to stop.

So a bit later we stopped at a FL Rest area and took these pics.

I'm sure the boys were in the van, wondering where we were...but we were having too much fun. LOL

Palm trees...make me happy!

You can tell by these pics that 1) it was really hot out, and 2) we are ALMOST there.

We drove and drove and finally we were on that magical newer bypass that come in on the West side of Disney
...no one is ever on this road, even though it's been open for a few years.

In the distance, you can see Spaceship Earth...and is that the CASTLE???

I kid you not, TWICE now, as we have driven this route, a RAINBOW has appeared over Disney.
If that is not a sign the place is magical...I don't know what is!

A few turns, and, hey, what's that up ahead???

Next up: Let’s go to the Movies!

/
I just realized that I never posted my Halloween pumpkins on here...so I thought I'd share. We do a different theme each year.

I love the pumpkins this year. I too hate the drive through Atlanta. I live about an hour from there. We leave at 3 am just to avoid it. But next year we are staying in Valdosta so I can try this new restaurant that I have heard of called "Cheddar's." Can't wait to read more.

Let’s go to the Movies!

We arrived at All Star Movies, our home for the next few days.
Since we had three adults in three rooms on the reservation, all three of us went up to check in, having deposited the minions at the little movie screen of cartoons in the lobby.
Check in went very smoothly, and as we had a room only for the night (free dining didn’t start to the next day), we knew we had to be back bright and early in the morning to check back in.
Our rooms were in the Love Bug section, second floor, near the stairway/elevator (but we never heard it), facing the courtyard.
It really was a good location, near the Fantasia section pools, and, therefore, not too far from the food court and bus stop.
One nice surprise...the rooms were supposed to be dh and I connected with the boys...and Disneygirl and the little girls next door.
Instead, dh and I had a room unconnected, and Disneygirl was stuck connected to the boys. LOL
Not what we planned, but dh and I were NOT complaining. :thumbsup2
As we unpacked the van, and looked around, there were some thunderstorms off in the distance. Consequently, the pool did not open for several hours.
We used that time to grab some dinner at the food court (see my food report), and explore the resort.

More in next post...

Continuing on in our ASMo tour...

Inside the big hat:

Dalmatians section (sorry, it was getting very dark out):

Big Dog...Booger down at the bottom.

Had to wait for several other families to clear out to finally get this shot ["Hicks On Holiday...Now in Color!"] :

Toy Story Section...WHOA, hang on!

They still like each other (it's only day 2):

Yeah, we're THAT goofy family...

Is it just me, or does the Toy Story area feel like they like you more as a guest when you stay there??? It's REALLY detailed compared to the rest.

My TALL boys:

On our way back from our tour, we noticed the pool was finally open!

Even though it was already 9 pm, (almost bed time for some little people),
1) we were on WI time, so, really only 8 am, and 2) if you can't swim late at night on vacation...when can you?

Next up: OH YEAH, we're going to Magic Kingdom...lunching with the Beast...and ALO-HA.

I enjoyed the great tour of All Star Movies. It looks like your family is already having a wonderful time and you have not made it to a park yet.
