#1 - What does DVC buy me? (EX: what do I get for being a DVC member/what am I actually buying?)
#2 - What is the minimum amount of points I can get per year?
#3 - Do the points carry over?

Thanks all!

#1 ~ a room to stay in

#2 ~ 160 is the min buy in and then if you want to add on it's 25pts for cash or 50pts to finance. The current exception is BLT which is 100pt min to add on.

#3 ~ you can bank points to the next year but then they expire. So they have to be used within 24mths. You can do that every year until the end.

1. This is VERY important. You are buying accomodations. You are not buying anything else. So the "perks", "benefits" etc should not be considered. Anything can change. The accomdations you get for each stay depend on the number of "points" you decide to spend. It can be just a few points a night for a studio up to a lot of points for Grand Villa.
2. I think the minimum from Disney is 160 for AKV and more for BLT. You can buy any amount on the resale market.
3. Points not used can be banked for ONE year. They they go "poof" and there is a window after which you can't bank!

What you need to do is look at points charts and accomodations and that will help you see how many points you need. I have not followed the outcry over the 2010 points adjustments so you might need to read that massive thread too.

Minimum buy in for BLT is still 160 points. And I beileve you can still purchase just 100 points at AKV. You would have to check on that. That being said. When you buy initially you can buy a minimum of 160 but you can buy any amount above that. So if you determine that 166 points is what your family will need you can buy that initially. Once yo buy in though in order to ADD points after your initial contract they currently have a 25 point minimum (which you must purchase with cash) at all the resorts EXCEPT BLT which is a minimum of 100 points. If you purchase 50 or more for your ADD on Disney will let you finance. Hope that help!

According to DVCNews.com, you can still buy into AKV for 100 points. But it must be 100 exactly. You cannot buy any amount between 100 and 160. After 160, you can buy any amount.

You can buy in as in a first time (non yet a member) buy in?!

They do NOT advertise this if its true. We bought in one month ago and it was not on a chart, on any paper or offered to us at anytime. It was "min 160 min 160" all over the place. I am kind of glad we didnt press into it though...because of the point chart changes..

I just don't know how much the BLT studio costs.

Thanks all for your answers!

DVC Point Charts; this will take you to points charts for 2009 for all DVC

resorts. As other posters here have suggested you should do some

calculations to get an approximate idea of what various villa types at

resort(s) you are interested in staying at will cost you point-wise based

upon the number of nights you'd like to vacation and during what times

of year you usually would prefer to travel.

Keep in mind that the Home Resort you pick ( ie DVC Resort that your points are attached to ) allows you to have 4 month booking advantage at that particular resort over members who own at another DVC Resort so it is highly recommended that you purchase points for the resort you most want to stay at in order to have that booking advantage available to you.

Each resort also has annual Maintenance Fees that owner's pay - the cost is based upon the particular resort X number of points you own ( currently the price per point varies from $3.67 to more than $6 depending upon the resort ).

An in addition to banking a year's worth of points that you own into
the next year which would give you 2 years worth of points to use every 2nd year, members may also bank & borrow from next upcoming year's allotment of points as well which can give you up to 3 years worth of points to use every 3rd year ( a banked yr of pts + current yr pts + borrowed upcoming yr pt )

If you want to buy into DVC at less points then the minimum purchase amount required on a direct purchase through Disney then research buying via re-sale market where you will find contracts of various sizes less than 160 points and often at a good $ savings compared to Disney's prices.
The Timeshare Store is a popular re-sale agency and sponsors these boards and you can look over their re-sale listings by clicking their banner at top of page.

Good luck :goodvibes

You definitely want to check out the 2010 points since there have been some significant changes to the points. This is the best way to determine how many points you might want to start with. Good Luck.

The 2010 point charts are on Dvcnews.com
