We will be visiting US from Oct 27-31. I am hearing rave reviews of HHN but I don't know if my kids could handle it. It sounds pretty intense. My kids will be 10 and 11. Will it be too much for them? Do you think it would be better for us to pop over to MK for MNSSHP? We've never done that. I promised DH "NO DISNEY" this trip BUT 10/31 will be my 40th birthday so he might cut me a little slack!

Info from the DIS on HHN:

This event is geared more towards teens and adults. The theme and tone of the party is modeled after horror films, and some of the ‘players’ you’re likely to encounter will be very scary – some bordering on disturbing. If you’re comfortable watching a horror film without getting nightmares, then it’s a safe bet you’ll enjoy Halloween Horror Nights. This is definitely NOT an event that small children should attend.

I've never been, but from everything I've heard, it's too much for some adults to handle, let alone kids.

HTH!

You know what your kids can handle...even though it's generally not for children under 13 or so. Everything is in your face and can get pretty gory in the houses. You would probably be better off with MNSSHP for now and come back for HHN when your kids are older.

I think you are right. I looked up some youtube videos and I don't think we are ready for that. If ever:) I think we will plan to enjoy our first family universal vacation and then scoot over to MK for my birthday and MNSSHP. Sounds like a plan!!

I agree...it's better to be safe than sorry. HHN tickets are not cheap.

My SIL was reduced to tears and she is 36 and a Halloween NUT..It was too much for her.It is too much for some adults and if your kids have never done anything like that I would stick with MNSSHP.

I wouldn't suggest it for kids under 12, unless they love scary stuff. In addition to the scares, there was a lot of drinking going on which may not be the best environment for young kids. There was literally at least one "nurse" offering blood bag shots in every line, and quite a few people who clearly had too many. The lines were quite long without express passes. Some of the posted times were 3 hours on a peak night.

We went last year for two nights and did not find it to be intense at all. I love haunted houses and am usually pretty scared in them. I found HHN comparable to local haunted houses in terms of the scares. Very few of the actors were even attempting to scare us. It was disappointing since we had been looking forward to going for many years and planned an entire trip around HHN.

It was nice to have a lot of houses in once place, the themes were well done and with express passes we got into every house and open ride with absolutely no wait on peak nights.

We may try it again as part of a longer vacation. I'm hoping they were just off their game on the nights we went.

They definitely need to be into horror stuff and not at all afraid of it to enjoy HHN at that age. I probably could have handled it, but I grew up going to community haunted houses (we had some really good ones in Chicago), and my family could have made the Addams Family move away from us. Also, the drunks are often scarier than the scareactors so the kids would see a lot of fall-down-drunks and hear some very bad language there.

I would agree it`s not really for kids. Under 13`s most certainly not. We saw one lad about 8-10 and his mum being taken out of one of the houses last year........he was very obviously terrified of what he had seen in the house.

It is adult orientated in many ways, so even if your kids are not scared by horror things there are the adult aspects of some of the things you may see.

My son was 13 when he first went and he is not phased by anything and he loved it as much as we did.......I`m the screamer of the family   but I wouldn`t have liked him to be any younger going.

I think if I was you I would go to MNSSHP.......we have never gone but it`s supposed to be fantastic :thumbsup2

your children would have a better time at MNSSHP.

tell your husband that it is your birthday and i said to let you do the motherland for the kids party.......

just tell him Mac said that and all will be fine.........;)

i have been to HHN for the last 12 years, going on 13 this year.
kids under 15 really don't enjoy the park with HHN as much as older peeps do.

there are no refunds, no children priced tickets at all.
i have seen quite a few families leaving the park or demanding a refund after their children have been upset by the atmosphere.
what an expensive waste of money for the family...........

it's just not worth it when they are this young.

in years to come, they might want to do HHN.
i believe the parents are the best judge to determine that.

i have been to MNSSHP 6 times.
it is a lot of fun, wonderful party atmosphere for all ages.

Thanks for all the responses. I really had no idea it was that kind of party.

I down with what Mac said. I will definately use the birthday card to get DH to MNSSHP. I all else fails, I will tell him Mac said it was OK:rotfl:

If you thought local haunted houses were comparable, I want to know where you live, because my experience is the polar opposite of yours.

Oh trust me...HHN is no party! It's more of an epic adventure! :rotfl:

It's quite the epic adventure... for me... not for my friends... its more of a puddle of tears for them...

But yeah MNSSHP would be much more suitable. Its also wonderful that you asked for opinions on this unlike some parents who don't even look into the event and bring their children thinking its just Universal's version of MNSSHP making for some very creative language directed to the poor Team Member Mom decides to take her anger out on...

You know...I've never been to MNSSHP mainly because of the cost. They need to have some kind of ticket for locals like the Frequent Fear Pass for HHN. It's not worth the high cost...even with the AP discount...for me to skip a night of HHN to basically pay for trick or treating.
