HHN - how scary is it?

I am a 47 year old chicken. There, I said it. DD roped me into two nights this year. We've never been and have always wanted to go. DH is staying behind so he can watch the animals, so I can't very well put DD, 20, ahead of me as we go along.

I startle easily. I LOVE horror but watch it through a tiny crack in my left eye, LOL.

What am I in for?

I find HHN to not be scary but indeed startling. There's someone popping out near you constantly. If you don't want much of their attention, smile and laugh a lot. The scare actors "feed" on the scared people. I strongly recommend taking advantage of Stay and Scream (or whatever they're calling it now), if you can be inside the park before 5:00. You'll get a head start on the general crowds, but there is an additional benefit for nervous first timers: You'd have a couple of hours to get into the swing of things while it is still daylight. The event is way more immersive once the sun goes down. It is an amazing event, and you'll have a great time!

Might want to head to youtube to watch a few videos:rolleyes1

The scareactors are pros, they smell fear:yay:. Being scared is half the fun.

If that's not your thing, may seriously want to rethink attending or at least try to get in the conga line behind a big dude and hide lol

I guess is what do you consider scary?

Hhn I did not consider scary
Raising 4 sons was scary .....

Both can catch you off guard and startle you

Get distracted briefly and scareactors can scoop you out and be in your face without you noticing it

But, it's all in fun

Kids and hhn have similarities
They prey on your weaknesses
And appear when least expected

It's fun!

You get scares and frights with the SA.......but it is honestly the most fun nights ever.........I have a SA target on my head I think.......like Keisha says above......they can sense when you're a good target and I think I may be just that.........:D

Not scary terrifying........scary fun.........but I guess if you don't like being jumped on it might not be fun for you.

DD thinks my reaction will be the most fun, lol. Rotten child.

I love fun scares and I'm sure I'll have a target on my head from the get go. As long as they don't touch me, we're good. I've been known to injure those that startle me by touch, lol. DH has the scars to prove it.

They don't touch you in any way. They get close though......very close......I have one picture where it almost looks like he's chewing on my neck......lol.......they creep up behind and beside you and you don't notice until they hiss in your ear or you turn suddenly and bam....they're in your face.......

I have loads of pictures in my trip reports of encounters with SA. It's a great source of amusement for my husband and anyone who tours HHN with us.........I'm a screamer and I've discovered I can actually run!

But if anyone reacts and shoves the SA for example, they will be removed from the park.

It is a phenomenal event and the houses are beyond excellent. You'll love it I bet........

Running - got it. Sneakers, no flip flops. I'll be sure to wear my workout gear. I can't wait. I wish we could have been there for TWD but her course load this past year was brutal. However, we love AHS and The Shining, too.

Thanks for all the tips!

I go to a few local haunted houses, screamageddon, howl o sreams, HHN, etc. each year... Horror nights is usually the most tame of them all. Horror nights has really become more of a quality of makeup and costume thing the last few years. With that said... there are a handful of times you will be startled. Nobody does design and costumes better than universal so its worth it just to feel like you are part of an actual horror set.

You can also do a show to help break things up if you feel overloaded. Personally I loved seeing Bill and Ted anyways but the crude humor doesn't bother me.

Also never know how the people around you will react, a few years ago in Alien vs Predator, there was a couple in front of us and something scared the boyfriend so much that he dropped to the floor. Needless to say my friend, myself and the guys girlfriend were dying until we got out of the house.

Another thing I found with the chainsaw gang, if they get near me I just stare them down and try to make eye contact. By then they realize I'm not going to run away screaming like the teenage girls do, so they go after them. Usually works with most SA's unless they sneak up on me. But do that and watch the chainsaw gang if they still have them, it's hilarious watching people run away from them.

I don't think it's scary per se but as others have mentioned it's more startling than scary...at least to me. I've been going since 2004 so I guess I'm a little jaded but still love the event.
