We are considering going to HHI in the fall for a week with another family and our teenage daughters. Neither of us have been to to the area and are wondering what there is to do besides pool/ocean?

Bike riding along plentiful trails, golf, tennis, fishing excursions, outlet mall shopping (huge complex), day trip to Savannah, kayaking, and of course, eating as there are numerous dining options. Many great places to try local, fresh seafood. There's plenty more, but those are a few off the top of my head.

They also have paddle boarding. If the teens are adventurous there is the zip line in Hilton Head.

We were worried we wouldn't find enough to entertain us there, but was pleasantly surprised that we did. Lots of pool/beach time but we kayaked, did a dolphin cruise, played mini golf, ate plenty of good meals, did some of the activities at the resort and such. We also went to the Coastal Museum, the Baynard Ruins, the lighthouse and the Forest Preserve. We stayed in Savannah for 2 nights before hand and there was plenty to do there and in Tybee Island as well.

Forgive my ignorance, but we were looking at this too and when I google earthed this it looks like it is not on the ocean. Is there swimming in the river, or is there a place on the ocean to go to as well?

We just returned from Hilton Head yesterday. The beach access for Disney is located about a mile from the resort. You can bike or there is a shuttle that operates every 30 minutes from 10-5. The beach house offer games, a pool, a bar, small quick service restaurant, as well as beach access.

As mentioned, the beach house is a stand alone building situated on the Atlantic and is part of the benefit of staying at DVC's HHI resort. The shuttle is very convenient, and if you don't mind the walk or bike (or run), it has easy access those ways, as well. The actual resort sits on an inlet where you can fish or kayak--just check with the front desk for a list of activities. Between the resort proper and the beach house is a major traffic artery; however, the bike trail runs underneath the road, so it is completely safe to bike or walk to the beach. . .or catch the next conveniently timed shuttle. ;)

"GET THOSE LEGS PUMPING" on bikes to the beach house!:wave2: We saw SO MANY MULTIGENERATIONAL FAMILIES biking...Very popular are bikes that even pull "little ones" behind. Grandma, Grandpa, very active lifestyle! If you choose to when we were there, it looked like easy parking also at the beach house. :goodvibes

Over at the Beach House there's a QS place, and a pool. There's also a heated pool, shuffleboard, and hot tub at the resort. Oh, and a basketball half court and a billiards table. And some people may not be aware that they have free rentals of board games in the lobby.

Thanks for all the quick replies..looking forward to our first stay, let the planning begin.

We decided to give it a try! If you rent bikes for length of stay - do you get a lock or how do you know which bike is yours?

i rented a bike for one day and still got a lock and kept it in front of my room (outside) when i wasn't using it.

I am surprised at the number of people who talk about taking the shuttle or biking to the Beach House. We've been to HHI every year for the last 12 years or so and have never done either of these. When we want to go to the Beach House, we just jump in our car and drive over. Most times we can find a place to park under the Beach House itself.

Agreed! We found it super easy to just drive over and park in the shade under the beach house. When I see people say they bike over I'm always curious if they take beach toys or chairs, etc. Seems like that would be a pain. We just put a trash bag down in the back of the van and put all our beach goodies on it so we didn't drag sand all over the van and off we went.
