Just returned from Disney HHI, back after 6 days in a one bedroom at the Live Oak Lodge. First time there and we will definately be back. I have some trip notes and some restaurant comments I hope are interesting and may help someone in the future.

Arrived on Sunday from Ohio and it was pretty cold and really windy. Rest of the week was in the low to mid 70's, but Monday didn't get out of the 50's. Tropical Storm Noel impacted the weather later in the week, mostly wind, but I knew this time of year weather could go either way. Met Mike at the Beach House (really friendly guy and really helpful) and he gave us some great tips. Like the fact that the wind direction was such that the pool at the BH was sheltered from cold breezes and we were able to use the pool on Friday even though it was windy and the high was 70. With plenty of sunshine, it was comfortable. Mike also put an extra hook on my crabbing net to hold an extra shrimp. By the way, pick up some chicken necks at Piggly Wiggly, the crabs can't run with them as easy as the shrimp.

Anyway, I imagine the BH is usually busy, but there was no more than 3-5 other people there any of the times we went over. Nice facility and I had no problem having that seperate from the rest of buildings. Took the dolphin cruise with Ryan and saw a manatee in the Harbourtown harbor. First one of the year Ryan had seen. Some few dolphins too. Recommend this outing, seeing the island from the water is worth it alone.

Now here was something I learned and my wife and I took full advantage of it. Our kids are both away in college, so this trip was just the two of us, so it was easier for us. The epiphany? Early bird specials.

So we ate at 5:30 instead of 6. Big deal, still worked great for us. For example:

Crazy Crab - I hadn't been there before and I didn't expect much, but it was great. Had fried shrimp, though I would get breaded butterflied, but they were whole, no tails, in a light batter. Absolutely tender and excellent. Had about 15 pieces, baked potato, corn on the cob. Wife had 1/2 crab legs and 1/2 shrimp, which was way more than half pound of each. Early bird included soft drinks. Total cost, with tax, before tip? Less than $29. Wow.

Red Fish - Two beers, two glasses of wine, I had ribs with a Cuban flair, wife had shrimp fettucini, both came with soup or salad. Less than $41 before tip. Again, excellent.

Blake's - Date nights Monday and Thursday all evening. Includes bottle of wine, any entree and chef selected desert to split (choc mousse for us), 40 bucks! And my bbq shrimp and grits was wonderful. And I learned that shrimp and grits even made sense together, guess that is a local thing.

If you like wings, go to Wild Wing Cafe, enjoyed those a lot. And Frankie Bones is on our list for next time, stopped for drinks and split a cannelloni when we got hungry. Neat place if you like a 'rat pack' atmosphere. Was packed, popular place.

We saved Hudson's for the last night and it was the only disappointing meal we had. And about the only meal we paid regular price on. Had combo platter with shrimp and scallops. Scallops were perfect, but shrimp was overdone, small and only six of them. They would have been adequate at the Red Lobster but I expected more from Hudson's. Last summer, had a great meal there.

Bottom line, loved our trip and ate very well. Don't forget to get the restaurant book from the front desk when you check in, has all of the eating establishments with menus and specials listed.

Jim, who needs to get back to work, eating 'regular food', and raking leaves before the snow arrives this week.:sad1:

Thanks for the great review! I especially enjoyed reading about the eating places and the early bird specials. I've never been to HHI before, but reports like yours make me eager to try it.

Question for you - In your opinion, would you think the resort or the area has enough to do during a wintertime visit when it's too cold for swimming, fishing, etc.?

Very cool spoting a manatee. :cool1: My DS & DH saw one a couple years back swimming through the creek at the end of the Disney pier. Definately a sight they will remember!

Sounds like you had a great trip. We've never been in the fall but I'm sure we will one of these days.

I hear you on the snow. :cold: It sounds like we're getting our first dusting tonight.

Thanks for the reviews. We're going to HHI for New Year's again this year and I was wondering what restaurants to go to. Sounds like the Crazy Crab will be on our list this year.

We went last year for New Year's and are going again. The weather was unseasonably warm and we should have brought our swimsuits for the pool and spa. But there was plenty to do without swimming or even golfing!

It depends, I think, on what kind of vacation you are looking for. If the goal is to relax, then definately. There are still plenty of shopping options and finding golf deals, if the weather cooperates, would be easy. There is a really nice hottub at the main pool too. Walking the beach at low tide is still a good idea. Obviously crowds are way down, so moving around is easier. Time will just move slower, which is a good thing.

At the resort, some events you normally have during warmer months are missing, such as the shrimp boil or nature walks. And I did hear that some restaurants close after Thanksgiving and reopen in Feburary. I imagine biking is still a good option, you can rent them from Disney, but you'll have to dress for the weather. By the way, seeing the Palmento Dunes by bike (across from the Disney area, on your way to the Beach House) is a great ride. And you don't have to cross over the main road (in fact, you are not allowed to try by law), there is a bike path that goes under the road and leads almost straight to the Disney resort.

I hope that helps! :goodvibes

Mr. Diamond -- glad to have your restaurant reviews! Which Crazy Crab did you go to? The one in Sea Pines or the one on the way back to the mainland? We may just give it a try over Thanksgiving!!

Thanks.

We ate at the one you pass on your right when you come onto the island. I had read somewhere that one was better than the one at Sea Pines, but that could be just a difference in atmosphere. Funny, last summer I didn't go to the Crazy Crab, you couldn't see the building from the road and the sign was so rustic looking, I was worried it wouldn't be up to snuff.

Now I wish I would have eaten there last year!

As I am eating a piece of Key Lime Poundcake (yum), I forgot to mention Signe's Bakery. Highly recommend this for both bake goods and breakfast. We had the deep dish french toast, blackberry filled and regular for breakfast before we left the island. Most excellent! Comes with fresh fruit and couple pieces of breakfast sausage. We bought a loaf of the Key Lime poundcake to take home (it feels like it weighs three pounds), I've never had anything like it. Worth checking out!

You can find it on Arrow Rd., turn right just before you get to the Sea Pines circle. This is somewhere the locals patronize.:thumbsup2

I don't think we've ever tried THAT Crazy Crab. We did try the one in Sea Pines a couple of times -- not bad, but not anything to rave about, either. :sad2: It's been quite a while, though, so maybe there have been some positive changes! But we'll have to give the one on the way to the mainland a try. Thanks again.

Yes, that does help indeed. Thanks so much! I'd love to try out HHI for a little getaway, but would only have the points to do so in a studio during January (probably of '09, since I'm set for Jan. of '08.) Something to think about for sure!

Thanks, Mean Queen, for your input on my question also. Glad to hear there would be plenty to do without swimming or golfing. The points chart for a studio in January looks tempting for a future little getaway to try it out. :)

The points values for January are amazing! We get the 3-bedroom and stay with 2 other families for 5 nights (sun-thur) and still have plenty of points left. The resort still does a lot of activities. We had a campfire sing-along, fishing in the morning, and many kid activities.

You're still correct---I ate there a couple of weeks ago and it remains as "okay". It always amazes me the number of people waiting forever to eat there when there are much better restaurants in Sea Pines. Never ate at the other Crazy Crab so have nothing to compare it to, but I assume the menu choices are the same.

Mr. Diamond: Early Bird Specials are my mantra! And Redfish is one of my favorite restaurants. Glad you enjoyed both!!! :)

Thanks for the review! Bummer about Hudsons, we usually have a good meal there too.
Don't ya just love saying Piggly Wiggly!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Thanks for the review. Do you remember which 1 BR villa you had? DH and I always stay in a 1 BR in Live Oak Lodge-I really like that location. That must have been so cool seeing a manatee!

We were in 1138. Third floor, right on the corner overlooking the marsh and that little inlet. Not a perfect view of the marsh due to the roof, but very good anyway. I think 1128 has an even better view. If you stay there, and if maintenance hasn't fixed it yet, make sure the door leading to the balcony is locked with the deadbolt. The knob didn't latch completely and the door blew open during the night. I jumped out of bed about a foot! :scared1:

The manatee was neat, they are unique animals. Different than anything else out there!

Hey great review!! I am going for Thanksgiving and was wondering what you think would be a good restaurant for dinner. There are 9 of us and I have done the Westin before but its too pricey. Any suggestions???

We're in Sea Pines this week and noticed the other morning that Skillets in Coligny is serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at a very reasonable price. But it's not a fancy restaurant. We've eaten Thanksgiving at CQ's, and it was very good. I understand that the Old Fort Pub (my very favorite restaurant) serves on Thanksgiving. We were also shopping at the Fresh Market and noticed their brochure offering a full meal for 8-10 for $119. It included everything - just in case you have a unit larger than a studio and wanted some leftovers.
