Hi.... have never stayed at Hilton Head and have a few questions....

1. Is it tough to get a 1 or 2 bedroom at the 7 month mark?

2. What is there to do on the island if you don't play golf or tennis? I know there are restaurants, shops and beach. What else is there?

Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Depending on when you want to go villas can be very easy or very tough at 7 months. The busiest time of the year for HH is the summer months, followed by Spring Break and Thanksgiving. If you are looking for reservations in January, you should have good availability for any type of villa.

There are only 21 Studios and 1BRs at the resort, so those will always be the most challenging. There are usually 2BRs available at 7 months even for the summer months.

HH has a wide range of activities for everyone. The resort itself has great family and age-related recreational programs for kids and adults alike. Nature walks, shelling, horseback riding, Dolphin watch cruises, crabbing, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, tubing and sailing are all available from or nearby the resort.

There are over 200 restaurants to choose from on the island, day trips to Savannah are an option for many. There are historical sites on HH itself - down at Sea Pines is the ruins of an old plantation and oyster mounds to explore. There are lots of art galleries on the island, the Coastal Discovery Museum has some nice programs available and withing walking distance of the resort is the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina with a number or professional musical and dramatic theater events each year.

Here is a link to local HH events during the month of July, 2012.

Hopefully, you'll be able to find something of interest while you are visiting Hilton Head.

Enjoy! :)

Thanks for the insight. Our goal is for June next year, between school and camp. Our kids will be between junior and senior year... plus the older "adult" daughter.

Consequently, I am trying to figure out what I am doing before my window comes up so I can just "do it" at the 7 month mark.

Thanks again...

The earlier you can plan in June, the better the availability and it sounds like a 2BR would be a great size for your family as well as the easiest to get.

Good luck! :)

We own there and could not book August at 11 months out for 2 bedroom. We did get cash at 11 months out and have gotten 2 nights on points of our 7 night trip.

Another activity for your teenagers-the billiards table in Big Murgie's Den, off the lobby. Last time we were there, the recreation CMs were overseeing a billiards tournament for teens.

What week are you going??? I didn't book until about 8 months out for our upcoming 2 BR stay - August 4 - August 9.

What about Hilton Head in January? I am from Canada so don't mind the "cold" temperatures. Just wondering if there is as much to do in Savannah and at the resort.

We were easily able to get a 2 bedroom within 7 months for April vacation for a past trip, though I have heard summer can be a bit trickier.

We LOVED HHI, truly one of our best family vacations ever. DH is a golfer and did not play once. We went to Savannah, spent time at the beach house, rented bikes and rode around (I ADORED Sea Pines), spent a full day at the resort at the pool, participted in their activities, and spent most evenings in a different area of the island. It was an amazingly relaxing vacation.

You should have no trouble getting a reservation for January. The weather can be a bit chilly (highs in the 40s) but snow is very rare and the resort still offers a wide variety of activities for all ages - adults included.

There is plenty to do at HH beyond the resort in addition to trips to Savannah.
