I was thinking about planning a 3 might stay at HHI in mid-October. My DH is a golfer; is there a convenient golf course in the area? I see other posts mention that golf is an option but couldn't find any particulars. Is a car here a must? Also, I was thinking of taking advantage of the recent discount and not using points. Are there any draw-backs to doing that? Do you get the same benefits? Thanks for any info.

There are many golf courses at HH and two within about 1/2 mile (Fazio and Trent-Jones). IMO, having a car is important just to explore all that the island has to offer. However, once at the resort there are shops, dining and recreational activities within a 10 minute walk and the resort does provide transportation to the beach facility.

October is a great time to be at HH. The weather is still moderate and the ocean will even be warm enough to enjoy a swim in early October. Evenings will be temperate (a sweater may feel good) and daytime temps are still warm. The pools are heated and may be enjoyed along with the great activities available at the resort.

Cash guests will enjoy the same experience as those staying on points.

Enjoy!

Golf at HHI-right up DH's alley. When we go to HHI, he golfs at least two or 3 times. One year he had the resort make the tee times for him, but he found it just as convenient and cost the same to do it himself. He loved the Trent-Jones course, but then he likes RTJ-designed courses in general. Also, good views from that course if you want to ride along. The Fazio course was a little tough-many holes have sandtraps surrounding the green, so unless he can get the ball up, think twice about the Fazio course (nice course, just saying because I don't know your DH's game. The woman with us got too discouraged and quit playing about half way thru). The Ocean Course in Sea Pines? Don't plan to see the ocean, except on 1 hole. He'll see more of the ocean at the RTJ course. And one last thing-I don't know the weather in October, but in November the early morning gets cold, so he encounters "frost delays" usually once or twice. Just be prepared for that if he likes to golf in the AM. Any more ??? about golf, please feel free to ask.

Oh, I just noticed one other ? I might help with. Discount cash (Visa?) vs. points. We've done stays where certain nights were points, others cash discount, and for us, at least, there was never a difference. As the week went on, we could never tell which night was which (are we paying cash or using points tonight?)

Thanks for all the great golf info. That's great that the hotel will book for you; I'm going to look into it. I booked today with cash - the visa discount was great so I decided to go with the 1 BR. Now I'm just trying to figure out the car issue. We're coming from NO. Google says it's a 12 1/2 hour drive. I'm trying to weigh the convenience of the car with doing that drive with a 5 y/o.

As a frequent HHI visitor (not the Disney resort, but HHI in general) I have to say I can't really imagine being on HHI without a car. There are times when we do park it and walk for 24 hours at a time (we stay in the Coligny Plaza area so there are 15 or so restaurants in walking distance) but there are so many OTHER really yummy restaurants all over the island that I have to eat at each trip that I can't imagine not having a car. If I was staying at Disney I would absolutely have to have a car because there just aren't enough restaurants right there to keep me happy (love Scots and San Miguels...but would have to move on after that, lol). Plus, we fly into Savannah, which is about a 45-60 minute drive from Hilton Head itself---have to have a car for that.

I love, love, love Hilton Head. My favorite place, EVER!

When your husband golfs and if you ride along in the golf cart, do they allow you to go just the two of you or do they pair you with other golfers. How busy does it get. We will be there in the beginning of Oct. Thanks for any help.

They've always paired us up with other golfers. The one time they didn't was the starter's choice, and seemed kind of wierd. He said that the guys we were supposed to be paired up with were regulars, and perhaps wouldn't like being paired with a stranger (!) so DH was asked, if he wouldn't mind just going and playing be himself. We go in November, never tried October, and it hasn't been busy-that is, we've never had any other golfers behind us waiting, although we've had to wait for other golfers a couple times. DH just tells them when he gets there that I'll be going as a rider, and although they say there'll be an additional $10-$15 charge, about half the time they "forget" (but they do remember to tell us they "forgot";)
