Whats the best time of year to go to Hilton Head? We're trying to decide our vacation options for next year and want to try something else in addition to WDW. Since we haven't decided our time to go, I thought it would be good to get info on when the best time to go is. Also, whats a good amount of time to stay there and what is there to do? We'll have our 2 DDs then aged 9 and 7. Thanks!

June - August can be very difficult to book at the 7 month mark so you need to plan to be on the phone at 9:00am when your booking window opens up. Ideal times to go for both crowds and weather would be late March/early April (avoid Spring Break/Easter) & late September/early October.

There are a lot of activities for kids at the resort and HHI itself has dozens of nice restaurants, shopping, tours, movies, beaches, site seeing, etc. You are also close to Savannah and not too far from Charleston so day trips to either are easily doable.

What kind of activites for kids do they have at the resort? Is the beach really close? What is the best thing about this resort? The worst thing? How are the room views? Do they have different grades/views?

We usually go around Thanksgiving. In fact, we are planning on being there 11/26-11/30. It is still fairly warm, enough for the pool or jacuzzi but not the ocean.

Well, it will be fairly warm as long as we're not there! The first Thanksgiving we went, it was literally freezing temps on Thanksgiving day. Since then, Thanksgiving is usually in the mid50s when we're there, with frost in the mornings.

To the OP, if it were up to me, anytime's a good time to go to HHI and stay as long as you can. But if you want it to be warm enougn to swim, I"d think late September or October might be a good choice. Most of the crowds are gone, but it's still pretty warm. I don't know if it's a good time for crabbing. I know that Thanksgiving isn't, at least that's what the CMs at the recreation counter told us.

We also go at THanksgiving. It's such a beautiful area and so relaxing. I'm not sure there is a bad time to go! :thumbsup2

We went about 3 years ago during Spring Break. It was unseasonably warm that year (which was great). We took the kiddos on a dolphin sightseeing tour and that was fun. We saw lots of dolphins and the captain let the kids sit behind the wheel and blow the horn. At the Hilton Head DVC they had tons of stuff for the kids to do. We had snowball fights (with wadded up white gym socks), we dissected owl pellets and found the bones of a mouse in it (really cool for the gross out factor, very interesting) and we sung silly songs by the firepit followed by smores. We had a great time! It is a fun place to be!

I spent three days there last Nov and had a pleasant time. My rambling trip report is at: http://www.travelblog.org/North-America/United-States/South-Carolina/Hilton-Head/blog-454931.html

No one was using the beach pool, but a few of us braved the resort pool. The beach is a mile or so away from the resort -- you need to use the frequent shuttle bus, drive your car, or use a bike to get there and back. There is a lunch counter at the pool house (and more during "the season"). It's very nice.

There were some kid's activities scheduled.

Best thing(s): overall charm, good location (but hard to find the first time), chocolate chip cookies, looking for all the "Shadow" evidence . . .
Worst: hard to find, not right on beach (but easy to get to), views are just okay (trees, some moss/lichen, and the sound in the distance . . ).

Am looking forward to going again in warmer weather.
