We are at Vero right now.... and MAN do they have a lot of crushed/broken up shells in their sand. We are used to the sugar white sand at the gulf beaches. My husband is asked me to post this question. You walk into the water at Vero and it is OUCH OOCH OUCH until you get far enough out.

The sand at HH is a hard-packed grayish sand. Not the powdery-fine white sand you get in Florida. It's very easy to walk on - in fact a lot of folks even ride bikes along the beach. You also don't get sand in everything like you do with the finer sand. Not a lot of crushed shell either.
The only negative I saw on my last trip was a LOT of jelly fish and one morning the washed-up jelly fish were all over the beach. But you just watch were you're going and you'll be fine.

As the PP mentioned the beach area sand at HHI is hard-packed and easily supports bike riding, running, etc. The beach patrol drives vehicles up and down the beach to get to each lifeguard station.

The nice thing about the HHI beach is that the area exposed by the receding low tide can be huge and often results in numerous tidal pools that provide a nice play area for the kids without having to worry about them getting washed out to sea. You can easily end up with 150ft or more of usable beach area between the water's edge and the loose-packed sand closer to the beach house.

When you were there...what month was it? I hate jellyfish. :scared1:

There is no sand more beautiful that the Florida gulf beaches, they have won awards for it. Sugar fine and oh so white.

As stated, HHI while not pretty is very easy to walk on and ride a bike or horseback riding.

I was there in May - So it could be a seasonal thing:confused3

Quite possible. We've been there in November, February, and March and never seen a jellyfish. Where we live (near South Padre Island) we get jellyfish on the beaches, but only during certain months.

I think up around Maryland / Delaware they get worse at the summer goes on...could have something to do with water temps?!:confused3

The sand/beaches are pretty much the same all along the ocean coast. The ocean just has much more agitation and movement of stuff to the shore. It is the price you pay to have waves.

Nothing beats the sands of Siesta Keys or most of the gulf coast beaches. I've always wondered why DVC hasn't built a gulf coast beach resort.

Summer is jellyfish season at HH. We've been stung several times over the years. Just go the lifeguard stand where they keep a vinegar spray solution to help. You can rub wet sand on it to help remove the nematocysts. Don't wash it with fresh water because that releases more of the toxin.

As noted, the sand is not pure white like the gulf beaches, but it is packed from the high tide mark and suitable for walking, biking and horseback riding. The Beach Patrol and Turtle Watch also drive their vehicles over the sand. It is a LOT wider beach than at VB with a much shallower drop off with no rip tides.

Are there any lifeguards near Disney's beach house at HHI?

Currently at HHI right now. We spent the day at the beach all day yesterday and didn't notice any jellyfish in the water. Will be back at the beach tomorrow and will report back.

Also there are lifeguards stationed at the beach area in front of the beach house so that shouldn't be a concern.

Agree 100%. Gulf beaches are so incredible. If DVC builds it, I will come ;)

OH ME TOO~~~~~

I was raised on gulf beaches............. spring breaks.............. summer time with my gal pals growing up...............

WHAT MEMORIES!!!!!!!!

Is this your first trip there? How do you like it??

All that beach sand at Vero arrived by the truckload during beach replenishment in Feb and March. It was brown and sludgey looking then. We were there for a few days in March - just when the beach reopened.
