We spent June 27-30th doing a Marriott Preview at their Monarch resort at HHI. Prior to purchasing DVC, I had done previews at most of the big timeshares, trying to decide which one was the best fit for us. I had pre-paid to do Marriott at HHI, but bought DVC before I used it. I assumed it had expired, but we got a call earlier this summer and I figured "what the heck!".

I am going to give a review of the beach first, and put some thoughts on DVC vs. Marriott at the end for those interested.

The Beach in Summer
We visited DVC at HHI in early April. It was WAY too cold to even think about enjoying the beach, and we spent about 5 minutes there. The rest of the time was spent at the DVC resort pool. My impression of the beach was that I did not really like it - it had the nasty gray sludge sand I dislike, and no waves, and no shells, and dark water. I grew up around lots of beaches and I like white or grainy sand, waves, shells, and blue or green water.

After returning in the summer, I still can't rate the beach as being in my personal top 5 (or even 10), BUT it was absolutely GREAT for my kids. They actually preferred it to VB , and I will say that being able to just let them be in the water for hours without keeping an eye on them at all times was very nice. The beach has this enormous stretch of very shallow water with almost non-existant surf. Lots and lots of people had chairs and lounges set up in the water, or were actually laying down in the water. There is no way on earth you could lay down in the gentle surf as it lightly laps your legs at a beach like Vero. The water stays shallow forever, with no sharp drop off. Except when the tide comes in, there are not really any breaking waves. The water was on the warm side. I found the experience of being further out akin to being in a gently rocking bathtub. There were many people just rocking on the waves on cheap blow-up rafts.

So, my opinion has changed. I will now say that the actual beach at HHI is very good, and probably even preferable to a wilder beach for families with kids. At VB, my 8 and 10 year olds loved being able to catch the waves, but they could only take it for about an hour at a time before they wanted to swim in the pool. At HHI, we were literally on the beach from 10-5 each day. They had no interest in the pool that was just feet away.

DVC vs. Marriott

I did not enjoy the resort as much as I enjoyed staying at DVC because it was simply not as inclusive. There was no place to get real food at the resort, they charged for DVDs, the kid's activities were minimal and the girls working the activities were not friendly and camp-counselor-y the way DVC CMs are, there were no free family activities, there was no lifeguard at the pool, no pool bar, no shop - we had to leave the resort for everything.

The resort rooms were beautiful and immaculate. It was both cleaner and better maintained than DVC. Now that I have something tangible to compare it to - DVC could really improve in this area.

We were in a 2-bedroom and I always stay in studios at DVC (although we added on to stay in a 1 bedroom part of the time). This is the second time I've been in a 2-bedroom condo and I will say that we really, once again, did not use the space. There were lots of chairs that never got sat down in, and only one TV got turned on. I don't enjoy grocery shopping and cooking on vacation. We just don't hang out in the room.

Free wireless internet is very nice.

The sales presentation was very low-key, but the sales guy lied a bunch of times about DVC which pretty much ruined his credibility in my eyes. I am not going to trust you to tell me the truth about Marriott when you claim 1) that you own DVC and its so great, but you hate the fact that your contract will expire in 16 more years and you'll never be able to take your grandkids. 2) That you own 500 points at Boardwalk and they keep raising the point requirements so that now, you can no longer stay for a week in a 2-bedroom during the peak sumer season and have to travel in September.

Howver, after learning about Marriott, I can clearly see how it is a MUCH, MUCH, MUCH cheaper and smarter way to do Interval exchanges than DVC is. We will probably eventually buy a resale week at the Legends property in Panama City and use it to exchange out and even to try for DVC at HHI and VB. It's a much cheaper way to stay in a 2-bedroom, and I'd like to get to the point that we can invite my aging parents that love the beach to vacation at a beach with us every year.

DVC is great for our family because we happily do numerous Sun-Thurs trips and happily stay in studios or 1-bedrooms - the point system w/DVC lets us take lots and lots of trips and stretch out our points like crazy. We are getting close to 25 nights on the amount of points it would take to do 7 consecutive nights in a 2-bedroom and we make out like bandits.

BUT - for 7 consecutive nights in a 2-bedroom at a beach, I think we'd do much, much better not using DVC points. Perhaps Dean can tell me if I've seen the light :goodvibes

It's been years ago, but I stayed at one of the Marriott's at HHI(plus I have been in other timeshares) and DVC needs to pick up on the cleaning/maint. issues(I haven't run into any but we all read the OMG look at this frig at BWV threads).

I really think if you want to get into "trading" you definately need to get a Marriott or another timeshare than DVC. But I think that trading works better for people that aren't tied down to the school schedule like us(some of the great trades I hear about are all off-season).

We talk about it, maybe we'll buy someday. :confused3

Oh I hate the negative sales pitch, did the guy know you were DVC owners? I would have said something myself.

I agree no way I could have kept my BIG MOUTH shut:rotfl2:

That would be my problem too! Though DH would have said something too(We have walked out of dealerships because the salesperson had to look up, Horsepower, Torque(techie engine stuff car guys like DH love) and what was standard on a car:eek: ).

He knew! I told him up front. :confused3

So, how much do you want to bet that the Marriott property he was trying to sell us does not actually have nighly campfires with storytelling and Smores? :rotfl:

Well you know some sales people, their brains shut off once the mouth starts going. :lmao:

I don't know which location of Marriott you stayed in, but IMHO you left out one of the BEST features of Marriott at HHI.

A large number of thier properties are ON the beach. If you are spending ALL day on the beach then it's all about location, location, location..... Sorry, but having a "campfire" doesn't replace the beach IMHO! (And the prices at the DVC HHI shop pretty much drove me to WalMart LOL! Since you have to have a car there....)

DH is not to keen on trying DVC on HHI because it's not on the beach. So if we do HHI, we will probably look to a Marriott rental.

That's why I sold my HH points. I just found the location to be lacking, too far from the beach, not within one of the plantations (which I like bike riding in) etc....

We were at the Sea Pines Monarch - both on the beach and within one of the plantations. The beach access was very nice, I will admit - but I actually did like the beach house set-up at DVC just as much - especially since there was a place to get food, ice cream, and adult beverages while on the beach.

To each their own. For many people, the attributes you list are the ATTRACTION of the DVC resort. Access to Palmetto Dunes covers the ability to ride the bikes inside a "plantation" for me. But many people definitely feel as you do.

actually preferred it to VB

.............. :sad2:

I guess I understand :sad1:

NO POOL BAR?

Yes, DVC is in the dark ages here.

The sales presentation was very low-key, but the sales guy lied a bunch of times about DVC which pretty much ruined his credibility in my eyes.

We experience the same thing with Wyndham (Fairfield then) We told them before hand that we owned DVC, but their presentation is so programmed that they told us all kinds of lies anyway. We'd tell them "that's not true" and then they would proceed to tell the next lie.... :confused3

we can invite my aging parents that love the beach to vacation at a beach with us every year.

Hmmm... my daughter is 27. I must be AGING

Very interesting report. Thanks.

Nah you're not aging - I am! I am almost 40  :scared1: , and my dad married my mom later in life. He's moving onto a fixed income this year, and mom never worked, so they are cutting back on expenses. I'd love to be able to give them a vacation, since they did so much for us when we were starting out. They always took us on vacation with them.

Did you realize the Sea Pines beach house was right next door (unless they moved it) You could have gotten all that stuff there. (Also there are NO adult beverages allowed on the beach in Hilton Head:rotfl2: )

Uhm... I fail to see the comedy in that?

Go down to the beach and "Survey" what your fellow beach goers are drinking... I think you will see the "adult beverage" ban is not one of the most effective ever put in place.......

(Offically, there are NO "adult beverages" on the beach at Hilton Head... unoffically.... well my Grandparents lived there for years and I don't think anyone ever inspected my Grandmothers beverages!!!)

Ah, yes, I had no idea this rule was even in place! :confused3 But I sure have seen a lot of drinkers! :lmao: I guess thats why I never realized it.

Thanks for the great report, Starbox!

I can't speak for the light but I suspect you are better informed now than you were prior to this trip. When I started reading your note and saw you stayed at monarch, I was a little nervous. While the location for monarch is very good, I think it's a very average resort overall. I do know they've made a lot of effort to improve at and think they have been somewhat successful. A few years ago we stayed at monarch for a week and then Grande Ocean for the following week. The difference was so great that it is simply hard to compare the two.

I am sorry you had a bad sales tour. This does not fit my experience with Marriott tours. The good news is it gives you a flavor of what can happen in the time share sales world. Actually the salesman may have done you a favor in that they turned you off so much that you did not consider buying. I would be very careful at legends. I think only platinum or platinum plus will be reasonable to trade there. I also feel that not having lock offs hurts that property tremendously. My information suggest that the trade value is only so so. If I did look to buy their, I would want to get a platinum week for around $6000. If I recall correctly, the fees there also fairly high.

It was not so much a "bad" sales tour as it was a weird tour. I'm guessing that the sales person could only sell us the Surf Watch property or something. :confused3

Hilton Head itself does not appeal to me as a destination to potentially return to every year - but I do love Panama City - I grew up about an hour away and spent lots of time there as I was growing up. I could happily own a week at Panama City or on the Emerald Coast/Sandestin area and use it as a beach week w/ my parents to supplement what we already do with DVC. It seems like it would be much cheaper that buying enough points for 7 nights in a 2-bedroom via. DVC.

I am sure I'll be asking for more advice when the time comes!

BTW - I think Monarch recently got a room update and the units looked great - 100X better than the old ones that are on the website!
