HH to Savannah via Ferry?

Hi!

We spent a night at HH on our way home from WDW this past weekend. We will be going back early June to spend 5 relaxing days there..can't wait!!

I was looking through some info and spotted a ferry service from HH to Savannah. Has anyone done this before? Is Savannah worth visiting?? We will have an 11 and 12 year old (boys) that enjoy history.

Also, can anyone give me some ideas about the bike trails throughout HH?

Isn't HH great?! I was lucky enough to get in with the 7 month window last summer. I didn't know about the ferry to Savannah, but I did visit and spend the night there before going on to HH. Savannah is truly a jewel of a little Southern city! It was left untouched during the Civil War because the general who led his troops there felt it was too beautiful to destroy. There is all kinds of fascinating history which you can learn from one of the many tours which you can take from the downtown tourist center. I hope to visit again sometime, and I will definitely check out the ferry - that sounds like fun!

We took a boat ride (ferry I guess) from HH to Savannah about 3 years ago. I thought Savannah was a very funky town.(Esp. If you are a "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" fan.) We took a guided trolly tour of the city. It was very hot. On a cooler day I would have enjoyed walking. Lots of history and lots of character. It's an experience.

There is occasionally a riverboat that runs from Savannah to Hilton Head, but I don't think it runs all the time and I don't know that it's a direct route all the time, it makes other stops. It's more of a boat ride than transportation to Savannah.

There is a ferry that runs from HarborTown in Hilton Head to Daufuskie Island, which is a VERY upscale private island residence development. You cannot really drive cars there, just golf carts, and since it's an island, the ferry is used for transportation.

To visit Savannah for a day you would probably be better off driving. Plus, depending on what you want to see, you might want your car here, as it could be a lot of walking. But you could see the historic area on foot. It is a pretty long walk though from River Street to the Visitor's Center.

There is a cruise available on the Spirit of Harbourtown that goes to Savannah, but it is not a ferry and does not have a daily schedule such as a ferry would. You can click on the link below to find out more about the cruise.

Definitely take a day trip to Savannah, by car or by water - it is one of the most interesting cities in the U.S. - the general mentioned above was General Sherman, who burnt an 80-mile swath through Georgia (including burning Atlanta) - he didn't burn Savannah because he was based there, but I think the little city also "go to" him, as it does to almost everyone who visis - take the trolley tour - try lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House (one of the best family style meals in this country) - but go early and be prepared to wait about an hour - worth every minute - great stores, bookstores, houses, parks throughout the city - to me there are only a few cities left in the U.S. that have as much character as Savannah - New Orleans, St. Augustine, possibly Charleston...
