We've never been in this area before, and would like to know about going in to Savannah. How long would it take to drive? Also, what about restaurants on the Island?

Thanks!

I would leave yourself about an hour to get to Savannah, it may be a little less depending on time. On HHI, we love Old Oyster House(great seafood and views), Frankie Bones(great food-lobster mac & cheese and fun rat pack atmosphere), near Disney HHI resort-Kingfisher is good family choice, love Scotts Fsih Market, Guiseppis take our pizza and pasta,Hilton Head Diner-24 hour good breakfast...many more, but these are a few. You can get a huge listing of almost every restaurant in the free packet at the visitor center.

Connears

Go to www.hhidining.com and most of the restaurants have their menus listed.

Our favs are: (and we always try some where new every year)

Kurama (early bird)
Sea Shack - very casual - but GREAT seafood
Harold's - not in dining book - whole in the wall for breakfast or lunch only
Wild Wing Cafe
Signe's Bakery

Have heard good things about many others - ENJOY!

Don't know a whole lot about the Savannah area, but PM "Conan the Librarian"... he is local and very happy to help you.

we did the drive to Savannah on our last trip to HHI and while its not that far mileage wise, with traffic etc. it takes about an hour. it was good for us for a nice morning tour and lunch.

as for dining--I second the Ole Oyster House. we had dinner there on both of our trips to HHI and it was really good!!! funny story--they have a gentleman playing the guitar near the bar for entertainment. on our first trip my DD was about 18 mmonths old and dinner got a little long for her so I took her for a walk down by the bar where the guy was playing. another mom had her young son there as well and the two little ones were dancing to the music as only toddlers can. very cute. the guy started playing some childrens songs and it was a hit. I made a request for the Wiggles and he had never heard of them. fast forward 18 months. we are back in HHI for my DD's 3rd birthday. same scenario. we are down by the bar and my now 3yo DD is dancing to the same guy along with a few other kids. and he breaks into a Wiggles Song. I was hysterical--here he had gone and learned a few since our last visit.

DH and I visited Savannah over Thanksgiving weekend 2006, and used Disney's HHI as a jumping off point. US 17 was not at all crowded during that weekend and made for a beautiful scenic route. Getting there was part of the fun!

We took the trolley tour that starts next to the convention center, and then took our own car to see the individual sites mentioned on the tour. I would highly suggest doing this. We also spent some time at our resort.

We are not beach / golf / tennis people at all. We are going back to HHI for Thanksgiving again this year. We hope to go back to Savannah, but also enjoy our resort a little bit more too by going to the beach, and on the dolphin tour, and maybe do the kayaking and bird watching.

Anyway, you will L-O-V-E Savannah!
