HGTV musings

Its true the labor saves them a lot but what about all the furnishings? They essentially furnish the entire house. Are we to believe that $30K covers reconfigurations of the house, new kitchens, new bathrooms, and all those furnishings on a fairly decent size house? I'm sure the numbers are ballparks and they aren't giving real figures, but I do think HGTV picks up more of the tab than we know, making it less realistic for anyone looking to achieve the same results in the "real world".

I thought it was pretty clear on Fixer Upper that the furnishings are not included in the price -- Joanna is staging the house so it makes a better reveal. A lot of the stuff comes from her own store, but they also show her shopping. If the couple wants the stuff, they are supposed to buy it (although I'm sure deals are made). I mean, if you think about -- how many people (women especially) want someone else to completely furnish and decorate a house for them with no input from them? It's staged, just like for a real estate open house, etc.

I think anyone who looks to a show for realistic reno advice or budgetary guidelines is making a mistake. It's on the consumer to do due diligence to figure out what a reno would cost on THEIR house in THEIR area.

Fun to look at size and layout in relation to prices, a 2,000 square foot house like mine might be worth $200,000 in one city, and $800,000 in another.

Watching house hunters now. 2,000 square foot home on an acre in Marysville, Washington. Husband works 30 miles away in Seattle.
$250,000.
