Did anyone watch the HGTV dream home show today? I was curious how much people would be spending either trying to live in this house or trying to sell it. I found a message board over at HGTV (which I was previously unaware of) and the people posting there said that there are clues in the house to show where next years home location will be. There was mention of apples, ravens, and mirrors...hmm..I'm not sure what to make of that. Do you have any clues what location that may be? Someone had mentioned Bodega Bay, CA because of the birds.

Oh, I missed hearing that part with the clues. Got a phone call and didn't get to see much of it. LOVE the new dream home though and "knew" via a stained glass chat board the person who won last year. All us "glassers" were thrilled for her!!! Now, if it can just turn out to be a Diser this year. :teeth:

Did she keep the home? As of last year, not one of the winners have been able to keep the home. Between prize winner taxes and maintainence costs, the house are far too expensive for the average person.

This year's house is gorgeous, but could you really live in it unless you were a wealthy retiree? It is on top of a mountain for heaven's sake! Where would you work? Kids go to school? It would be nice if they could build a practical "dream" house that the winner might actually get to keep.

thats ok.. i've decided that once i win this year, i'll be useing the home as a vacation bed and breakfast for a group of messsage board friends, and will be able to afford it because i intend to turn my repair and remodeling knowledge into startdom on hgtv anyway. that way hgtv can pay me to live in their house , and the house can pay for itself in room rentals.

We were under the impression she was keeping the house. She sold her existing business and was sooo excited about the move. She never returned to the glass boards so we all lost touch. Hmmm, will check and see if anyone knows what happened. :confused3

What a house! How could a "normal" person afford to keep it though? I guess I'd sell it and use the windfall to build/buy a bigger house here where I live.

It's not far from where I live. So I'm planning to win it and still be close to home. I could probably still keep my job and DH could keep his and we could go up on the weekends. LOl :rotfl2:

The house is gorgeous, but I seriously doubt the winner would be able to keep it. They'd have to take out a home equity loan to pay the taxes. I agree about building a more reasonable home for real people. Every year, it just seems to get bigger and bigger.

I kind of wish they'd get a new interior designer. Don't get me wrong, she did a great job and it's lovely, but the interior looks a lot like last year's house. I think I'd like to see something a little more eclectic and daring.

Also, they're picking the winner a little differently this year, also have more prize levels. Read the rules to check it out.

I agree. She keeps doing the same thing. I want to see something amazing. I was really disappointed in her kitchen.

My DS11 wants to use the house as our winter home! :cloud9: He says we can't move because of his friends. Actually, the house is about 15 minutes away from my father's family farm. We will have lots of relatives to visit.

I'm glad someone else agrees with me. I was afraid I was going to get flamed. ;)

I forgot to add that I think the dining room table is a loser. It ought to be a huge thing in a home that size.

I've hear that only 2 people have kept the homes. The winner from last year is currently still posting on the HGTV boards. They paid the property taxes but have not yet paid the hefty tax bill from their winnings which is estimated to be around 600,000. They have until this April to pay.
They wanted to turn it into a B&B but they couldn't because the town wouldn't approve the business. Apparently the town owns the land?? Can you imagine that you win a house but you do not own the land?
The taxes on the winnings for this year's home were estimated to be around 800,000. I would guess (and I'm not any type of financial analyst) that if this year's winner sold the house, maybe they'd end up getting about 800,000 in the end. It sounds like alot of trouble to go through but I'd do it just to be able to build my own smaller version of my own dream home. There's no way my husband and I would be able to keep the HGTV dream home. It's fun to dream but I sure hope the winner of the home has done their homework.

The town has zoning. The guy wanted to rent out the guest house to help with expenses but needed a change in zoning to do that and the city wouldn't approve it. Can you blame them? The city attracts a lakefront development of wealthy taxpayers who want peace and quiet in their cocoon...why would the city's elected officials tick off local homeowners to allow an "outsider" to turn part of his property into vacation rentals?

Anyway, I had this whole conversation last year when my secretary asked if I was going to enter...The cash they give you is not nearly enough to pay the federal income taxes. You'd have to have a very hefty mortgage to borrow enough to pay the taxes. I never even enter.

But I LOVE the location and some of the features. The guest house is great---esp. the bunk room!

I just went to the web page to enter. Everyone must have decided that when the go to work Monday morning, they would go and enter. I got a time out page, when I subscripted all my info.

Taxes would be $600,000 yoozaa.

This year the winner also gets $250,000 in cash, so I think I WOULD live there, sell my house here and without a mortgage we wouldn't need high-paying jobs. Maybe I could do something I ENJOY! Wouldn't THAT be nice? I wonder what the taxes are.

No, I think the federal income taxes on the gift of the home, furniture, car, etc. would be in the $600,000-$800,000 range...a one time payment. Then you'd have to pay property taxes every year...don't know what that would be.
