Hey Walkers Wanna Share Training???

I have gone and done it again....injured that left foot again...now on top of the tendonitis I have pulled something down the outter side of my foot and it twinges when I flex my toes the wrong way, wierd I know...I am okay to walk, but not at speed...anybody ever done this to themselves?

Darling what did you do? Where is the tendonitis at? Is the new pain up around the ball of your foot behind the big and second toe?

Dave:)

I went bowling!!! Killed me!! my tendonitiis runs under my foot from the plantar fascia that connects to your toes and runs underneath to the achilies, mine is inflamed and sore right at the back of my arch, right at the front on my heel, I can actually see where its swollen when I compare my feetsies...my new injury is a result of both overcompensating and wearing the wrong shoes when bowling the other day...runs right down the outside edge of my foot...Its wierd I am fine unless I move my toes, point or flex and dont even think about spreading them!!!!yow!!! but I went to a kickboxing class tonight, just did the low impact version and did elliptical yesterday, so hopefully I can get over it in a few days and get back on the TM

I have been dealing with this tendonitis for 2ish years, cortisone shots just take the pain away shortterm...only thing I know to do is just grin and bear it and do strenghtening exercises and wear really good shoes!

thanks for caring tho!!!

Are you seeing anyone for this? It sounds like you could have a heel spur. I had those myself, also you have a bruised nerve in the ball of your foot from the sound of it.

For the heel spurs stretching ice and lots of ultra sound from a good ciropractor or sports oriented PT department and a good foot Dr.

Are you a runner or a walker?

Dave:)

Right now I am walking mostly, I'd like to run, but as I am a tad overweight I find running puts lots of stress on my knees and hips, but strangley sometimes the running feels easier, my feet dont want to "roll" like people I saw in the videos that you recommended...

cold makes that tendon shrink and causes pain(I am not a sissy but it really hurts!);) I have taken to heat and stretching and wearing a support, and just trying to not get discouraged about it all...

maybe I will go back to foot dr...last time I felt like they kinda shrugged hteri shoulders ad said "we could do surgery"

Go see a good ciropractor, ask around like at the local running club, most have a web site or just call several till you find one that works with athletes. (You are an athlete, just a bit out of shape from the injury.)

It sounds like you have (hard to tell online) a heel spur and a bad case of PF, both are very treatable. You will be amased at how quick you can be pain free, ultra sound can break-up the spur, I wouldn't recommend surgery either except as a last resort.

I tried to run hurt for 2 years and finally started getting treatment, I had created a lot of other problems from favoring my sore achillies, I had a lot of issues that the ciropractor and the massage therapist took care of. With-in a month I was feeling way better and now I'm training to walk at a national class level.

Good luck lady and please at least get a consult.

Dave:)

Good morning,

I was just reviewing the video clips that were posted. This is the first time I have seen racewalking done right. I would love to accomplish this form.

One thing I found interesting is that it seems their stride is longer than I would have expected. I think I make too short of a stride.

Dave, does Erica racewalk with you of is she more focused on as a fitness walker. How are your back to back LW going?

Oh, today is a yoga day for me. I may have to do it at home though dd is home sick today.

Maggie when you are doing it right you will feel like your stride is to short because the stride is more in the back than the front. Look at your self passing a store front some time and you will be surprised that your stride is longer than you think. Remember arm swing more to the back.

Yes Erica is racewalking. She is in the 12 mpm range for long distance, we did a 10 mile monday very comfortably in 2:11 and a 7 miler on Tuesday in 1:31. These included the slower first mile to warm-up. We have a half in 5 weeks and I think she will be able to do about 2:45.

Yes the workouts are going great, now that the weather has warmed up and we can get out without freezing.

Feel better lady.

hi all -- can i join you??

i was sitting around feeling sorry for me -- scheduled 7 miles on the TM today and DD home sick from school and can't go until 3 p.m. i most almost always walk in the morning and i didn't realize throwing my routine off would diskom****ulate me so.............

i admire racewalkers :worship: last spring i thought i'd retraing myself to a racewalking form and i'm still working on it! Lisa loves Pooh DF was kind enough to email me some beginners info as he is a racewalker coach but i just never felt like i 'got it'? i still concentrate on walking in a straight line and rolling heel-toe and letting my hips swing but the hip swing thing just doesn't feel natural to me. this thread has inspired me to revisit

right now i'm what i call powerwalking between 4.0 and 4.2 for tempo walks on the TM and just started 4.3 a little. i have noticed that my pace has sped up a little, but i wondered if it was from intervalling on the TM too? i have been doing incline intervals to try to burn fat and loose weight. that hasn't happened yet but my speed has increased :thumbsup2

right now i'm training for the columbus 1/2 on Apr 14 ---

anyhow -- hope you have room for one more?

hey i'm back already, i just got home from my 7 miler -- yea it's done! and i tried to kick up my speed without feeling like i was overdoing it for a LW. managed 3 miles (different times) at a 4.3 speed and actually finished the time out with 4.4/4.5 b/c i was playing 'games' with myself to get to the finish of it before my TM timed out at 99 mins. which i did!

ok two questions: i got a new pair of shoes after the 1/2 b/c those shoes were awful. i blistered for the first time ever. my blister areas are a bit tender today after this LW. how long does this take to go away?

i think i'm paranoid now about my shoes. I have orthotics for my tendonitis area and my latest x-rays revealed heel spurs now. but i noticed when i was getting going that my feet were HOT! could this be from shoes not quite worn in and stretched out just perfectly? i had my wicking socks on. which probably need replaced, maybe that's it? you know that HOT foot thing? i have NB shoes with rollbar, that seems to work best for me. i have been fitted before at running store, but bought shoes online with same categorization as the shoes i was fitted for.

ok i'm rambling................

Good walkers have tremendous endurance, since there is no pounding you can go forever with the right technique. I do 11 min miles for 10Ks and usually will pass several runners in trhe latter stages of a race. In the marathon we are continually passing people the entire race.

Welcome Ohmom! Are you strictly a walker?

Welcome marathonmommy! I have a dream of passing runners one day! That would mean I am getting this racewalking down pat!

I am planning on walking the chicago distance classic this august. Congrats on your LW. I am still trying to get the racewalking form down as well. I actually started slowing down the TM to better concentrate on form. I am enjoying the process of learning. However, it is hard for me to keep up the workouts. With multiple commitments, it is so easy to blow off my walks! I need these forums to stay accountable. I post on the weekly running/walking thread, but it is impossible to keep up with those men and women! I think that most of them are incorporate running with their walking or purely run. Their doesn't seem to be that many of us that stick to walking.

I hope all is well with everyone. Spring being around the corner!! I can't wait to get outside more. Oh I guess I will have to get through this next snowstorm first!

Happy walking to everyone.

Hi Maggie,

DH and I walked the CDC last August. We had a lot of fun, at least until I developed some nasty blisters. We are planning on doing it again this year. The last part of the course is right along the lake shore, very beautiful!!

Wow...Sorry I've been MIA. I just got caught up. Unfortunetely I'm back tonight for 3 nights of 12 hours so will have to recatch up on Tues. Dave I will be sucking in my abds all weekend. Seems so easy but I can see how it will be effective.
I've managed to get to the gym for TM workouts this week and weights. My leg is doing better now that I'm not doing crunches. Still the odd twinge but nothing like before. Nerve pain has got to be a 10.
For PF try freezing a water bottle and rolling your foot over it for ten minutes several times a day. Can't hurt and could help. I did ultrasound and massage-that worked.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

hey ya'll just checkin in to say hi... been working on the elliptical tonight and the bike yesterday, trying to keep it fairly low impact, will try to get back on TM next week....

OhMom - I have Plantar Fasciitis (self diagnosed in my left foot, dr diagnosed in the right 2-3 yrs ago, thats what I am basing my left foot on) I tried NewBalance 991 for a while, they were ok, then I had Brooks Addiction6 they were pretty good too..now I have Asics Kayanogels, by far the best yet...very worth the money. no breaking in, put em on in the store and my feet said AHHH...so they went home with me...

Carole I'm so glad the ab exercise is working for you. Although it's simple and easy it's effective because you can do that all the time and crunches you burn out on pretty quick.

I actually learned this from Denise Austin, that is her secret, and she is famous for her strong tight abs. Even after 2 children.

Hi Dave (and all other walkers):

I am committed to doing the Disney Half Marathon in 2008 as incentive to get back in some semblance of shape (I estimate that I currently need to lose 100+ pounds and would bet that official life insurance guidelines would say a lot more) and recover from having both hips replaced (with complications). My doctor and physical therapist have said it is worth a shot, but NO running allowed (not that I even contemplated that anyway).

Anyway, as I am just starting, I was curious if you thought trying a racewalk-type style would be good for me. I am in the process now of just being able to walk again unassisted (i.e., no cane or crutches) so do not really have any technique yet. Also, do you know of any sites that might be of interest to me as to distance walking with hip replacements--I've tried some searches but no real luck yet.

Finally, I have never done any distance type events before, I played football, rugby, wrestled, etc. Could you, or anyone else, give me an idea of how hard it is to transition from treadmill to actual "road" work. I ask because at least for a while, I will be limited to a treadmill.

Thank you and anyone else for any assitance or advice you might have. I have been following this thread with interest and will post if I have anything of value to add (doubtful) or additional questions (if I don't bother you all too much).

Slap Slap, now pay attention! Everything you have to say is of value and you are NEVER a bother. Ok deal?

We are all on a journey and we are all together to support each other, but we are an experiment of one.

Everyday go to the DisneyRunning.com forums and find the walking section and start a journal, I moderate that one. Or start a journal on the wish site.

Go to the walking site and ask Patty, our resident personal trainer and racewalker about the hips and racewalking technique. She chooses to help us with her experience as a personal trainer and she also runs the walking site. She would be glad to give you advice and recommend other places also. She has great beginner programs on the walking site also.

We support each other, we have up days and down days and everyones thoughts and ideas are important.

Welcome to our world. And I can't run either, not even an option.

Dave:yay:

I don't have any info to add, but I think it's wonderful that you want to do this! I hope it goes well for you!

I don't know about hip surgery but I can comment on recovery after surgery in general. I had an ankle fusion last March so was non weight bearing for months following. I got back to the gym 7-8 months post surgery and the best thing I did was get myself a personal trainer to guide my gym activities.
I'm a gung ho type person and give 110 percent to anything I get involved. And I really want to get back to a strong healthy state. I was worried that I would injure myself if I didn't have guidance. I was shocked when she said "4 minutes on the TM and build up by one minute each gym visit" I did as she said until I got up to 30 minutes on the TM. Then I started my own walking program. I too would like to do a half or full Disney Marathon. Though I am more looking at 2009.
Its wonderful to feel active again. You are going to love seeing those muscles come alive. Keep in mind that muscles and ligaments take a year to heal completely from surgery. Going slow and listening to your body goes a long way. Kind of a turtle race but worth it.
