Hey Pete...Questions about Australia

I have been following this thread absolutely fascinated. teskak, you could get a job lecturing on Australian studies!
Australians could best be described as mutts
How true...my children are a mix of irish, maltese, dutch, english, scottish, indonesian and chinese. The very best that a mutt can be!

I think Nicole Kidman & Hugh Jackman made Australia because they liked Baz Lurhman and hoped it would become something similar to his other big budget movies like Moulin Rouge.

Forgot to mention that Australia's relationship with New Zealand is I guess similar to the USA relationship with Canadians. Minimal border controls and visa requirements between the 2 countries, lots of Kiwis come to Australia to work, sit on the dole....... Many many non-Dis friendly jokes concerning Kiwi's, sheep and unnatural relations:rolleyes1

Aussies hold very few things to be sacred, besides 2 football grand finals, a horse race, the 3 day weekend, the pub and a 1915 disasterous battle at what is now known as ANZAC Cove http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZAC_spirit we find it bemusing the degree of sacred and passion displayed by USA to national pride / flags and politicians.

During the Australian elections the revalation that a leading candidate (later Prime Minster) visited a strip club in the USA was not met with shame or disgust but instead "Thank Christ he is NORMAL":rotfl2::cool1: But his excuse of being too drunk to look or remember was a bit sad.

We can't get the dole anymore but we do go over and work enjoy the sunshine and spend our time ribbing the Aussie. We too have many non Dis jokes concerning Aussies ;)

So, do you think if I immigrated to Australia all of my bills would follow me there?
:)

Don't you guys have any questions for us Yanks?

I mean, you don't know how exciting it is to live in the tundra state of Michigan where the weather is always cold and the economy colder.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Great info--Thanks.

Being an Irishman that part fascinates me. So, besides the aborigines, most Australians are of Irish descent? Must be interesting since we are all so damn moody and have quick tempers :)

Oh my.... that's an Irish trait? Guess I must have more Irish blood than I thought. =)

I am loving this thread........and so educational as my husband is Irish and he and my oldest son certainly hold the moody trait in their DNA lol.

What interesting discussion, especially being a Canadian and reading the NZ and Aussie banter. I would like to put out there that the Americans are not as educated about Canada as we are to them. I don't want to start a flame here, but US geography and economics is a big part of our grade 7-9 schooling.

Shoot I forgot my question.....

US - gun toting/flag bearing/vain rednecks
AUS - knife weilding croc hunters/outback nomads
CAN - igloo living/no electricity or plumbing

What are the Kiwis?

We're Poms - but that actually comes from the original names for the prisoners sent to Australia - prisoners of his/her (not sure which :upsidedow) Majesty ;)

The Americans call us limeys because we used to take lime juice on our ships (back in ye olde times) to stop sailors getting scurvy. Since we could import them cheaply from our colonies, they were the easiest and most long lasting of the fruit.

I knew a history degree would come in use somewhere! :lmao:

Interesting conversation. I was amused by Pete's comments about the food over here. It was a bit like our reaction to the food we came across in Florida. To me it's quite normal to put pineapple and beetroot on a burger. But I couldn't get over the fact that all bread tasted sweet in Orlando or that the cheese was orange. And what is 2 percent milk and white butter. I knew to take my own coffee with me this time along with my vegemite. I also couldn't get over potatoes and those biscuit things aswell as pastries for breakfast. I guess it's all what your used to.
