Still planning for this infamous trip, now know for sure that I will not have a job to return to in Sept (I work in the school system and get laid off every summer, but enjoy spending it with my kids on the beach even though I'm broke!), I have been there for 10 yrs but downsizing special projects in the Education Dept. I am not worried (yet) I know I will find something, I have been parttime all this time so I will look for fulltime and that will really help with the finances BUT I am starting to feel guilty and stupid for planning this trip in August when our financial future is very unsure! Need some advice and encouragement! Thanks for listening!

Responding to "What exactly is South of the Border?"

There is a song that goes "South of the border, down Mexico way..." so just a few feet south of the NC/SC border there is a tourist attraction with a Mexican theme. The theming consistes of a large sombrero on a tower (You can go up into the tower on an elevator when it is working) and a character named Pedro who appears on all those signs.

The "theme park" is actually a cluster of shops and other things. No admission fee. There are restaurants, bathrooms, gas stations, fireworks stores, a small area with rides, souvenir shops with incredibly tasteless items, and a motel. (SOTB is almost exactly half-way (12 hrs) between New York City and Miami.) It seems too good to pass up, but after you have seen it once or twice, you will not need to return.

Vent away:)

And in the meantime, maybe plan a trip South of the Border???;)

I do not know your complete financial situation however I can understand the guilt you may feel as money for holidays can always be used somewhere else just as easily. Sometimes you can buy a car, put the money towards your mortgage or RSP, or away for a potential emergency.

Our thinking is that you only live once and we work really hard. Holidays are a necessity and we all need a break and need to endulge once in awhile. Providing your trip is paid for and you budget spending money while there you will not regret going. You may struggle a little afterward but have so many memories to remind yourself it was worth it.

We were down south in March with the kids and have a business trip this summer. My husband and I decided to take a small holiday after the trip as we are in need of some time with just the two of us. Yes it will not allow us to save money for a "rainy" day, but our marriage is more important than anything and WE NEED A HOLIDAY TOGETHER!

I know people who have a combined income of $200,000 and only take trips once every 5 years (and complain the entire time about how expensive it is). However they are always uptight and stressed out because of work and the kids. In my opinion take some of that money that they are tucking away for RSP or RESP and endulge once in awhile, they might be happier!
