Hey Hey we're the Whiteheads, a pre trip report

Aww, Betsy, so sorry you had so much trouble with the Magic Bands, what a hassle. I hope things improved for you.

things did improve but holy cow it was very frustrating on that first day. seemed like every time someone "fixed" the bands they had to be fixed again by the next person. I really felt bad for the guest services folks. they really had their hands full with this,

Hi Queen Bee.

I'm sorry the first day didn't start off well. It coincides with many of the reports people are having here. I'm with Marita and really do hope things get better.

What was your first impression of CBR? Besides wanting to make sand angels. I hope our recommendation didn't let you down. I'll wait to hear more about the resort.

See, I told you could do this. You're off to a great start.

Oh my gosh that place is so pretty and relaxing. we all were amazed by the place. you and nebo were spot on on this one
:beach: beautiful just beautiful.

Annnddd we"ew off

Hmmmm... that sounds familiar.
Can't quite seem to place it, though...

:rolleyes1:

So I figured if I was going to steal material for this trip report might as well go with one of the best posters on the boards

::yes::

Departure day came with the usual cold January weather we get her in So Cal.

OMG! That must've been brutal! :scared1:

That said we wanted to get things ready to leave with the temps expected to be 80 or so

Yup. Like I said. Brutal.

and then off for the drive to take Stanley the wonder dog off to Lance's mom's house

I like how you call your pup "Stanley the wonder dog"

Every pet owner has their pet's name... and nicknames.

As we break into "Onto the onramp and up the freeway to grandma's house we go"

Stanley just gives us "the look". You dog owners know the one I am talking about, the how can you leave me like this look.

We do not get that look.
We take Piper back to the breeders where we got her from.
We've stayed in touch and are now friends.
Piper gets crazy excited because she knows she's going to be playing with her cousins and neices and nephews.

he will be fine and more than likely a pound or two heavier.

Familiar with this process.

decide to double check my camera to see if it has a full charge. Good thing too it was just about dead.

I did that fairly recently.
We went somewhere and I brought the camera along.

Nope. Dead battery. No pics for you.

I have already put the bag in the trunk that we are gonna check and in there is the pouch with all my charging cords so out I go to grab it so that I have a full charge for the beginning of our trip.

I was expecting you to then say you left the bag in the house.

I've read too many Nebo TRs apparently.

We went to pick up Scarlett and those folks she lives with

I will say this all those hours of playing tetris as a kid payed off for us as he got all of our carry ons the big check bag and the stroller in that trunk

I knew video games were good for something!

I find the right lot, park my car and make a walk around it to make sure we don't have anything hanging out of the door and that all is well and no evil seatbelts are hanging out

Oh, come on. Who would ever close a door and leave a seatbelt hanging out, thus draining the battery?
It'd never happen!

ahem

we get the bag checked and up to security where they walk up to us and pull us out of line, I look at Lance and Randy and ask ,"what did you two do?" :)

 Blame the innocent!

Then we get to magical express. *thud*

uh oh

once we get to the hotel I head up to check in. and the CM says to me, "your magic bands are not showing up on our system"

Betsey's head explodes...

I am getting a bit cranky and majorly frustrated at this point.

A bit?

the only thing we need to do is go to guest services to get the memory maker sorted out.

What is 'memory maker'?

go to our rooms and all is well

I was cringing in anticipation that the bands wouldn't open the doors.

Easy Peasy.

Lemon...

Let's get this done and go back and drop the water in the rom and head out, simple right?

Oh boy. Anytime someone writes "simple right?" that's usually a cue for all H to break out.

there is an issue with you guessed it the Magic bands not showing up in the system.

Oh, man. I don't think I'd be able to keep it together anymore.

"Oh, the bands don't work? No problem. Give me a full refund on room and tickets... I'm going to Universal."

By the time we get sorted out here we have missed our first window and there is no way we can make it to the studios in time to hit the second or for that matter the third one either. :furious::furious::furious:

Wow.

Just.... wow.

by this time I am almost ready to book a flight home.

I don't blame you one iota.

I looked at here and said "you know these bands kind of stink if you ask me you guys should like up the folks who came up with this and they should let all of the CMs who have to fix and refix these things while dealing with cranky people like me have paintball guns and let loose on them"

:lmao: Good idea!

she looked at our plans for the next day and said how about anytime fast passes for test track at epcot tomorrow?

Honestly? While that's very nice and all.... it doesn't make up for losing all your time in HS already.

they will not interfere with your other fp either.

Why am I doubting this statement.

I will say this place is just beautiful. And yes I wanted to run to the closet beach and make a sand angel but resisted the urge.

You should have! The camera batteries are all charged!

things I think:
I think that tetris can be used in the real word by any one who has to pack an economy car for vacation;
I think that the folks at Ontario international are pretty darn nice, they were helpful and patient getting a baby and her broken grandpa through security.
I think magic bands are a bloody nightmare right about now and I am worried about our first park tomorrow and how they are going to work.
I just don't think I can take yet another CM having to "fix" them since everytime someone "fixes" them it takes at least an hour.

I love this "things I think" section.

Next up:holding our breath to se if we can use these things to get into animal kingdom.

I'm on pins and needles!

Well, okay, I fell onto DWs sewing basket, but still...
Can't wait to hear about it and see if the bands fail again!
Thanks for the chapter, Betsey! :goodvibes

What a horrible start to the Disney Experience! I must admit that I'm kind of glad we decided that this year would be an off year. Hopefully they'll get all this MB/FP+ stuff worked out by March 2015 when we are due back again. I am shocked that at the end of the day it ended up costing you a park visit. I hope you were able to use it up later in the trip - nothing grates more than flying out of MCO with unused days on your ticket!

Meet Pixel. A co-worker's son brought her home from the farm, but they were unable to keep her. There was no way we could let her go back to a farm. Her name was Dax at adoption, but we thought better. She's all black with one little round spot of white on her chest, like an errant pixel on screen.

Nicknames are Pix, Pixie, Pixelicious... and like all recalcitrant children she needed a full name for when you are truly angry with her. This developed into "Pixel Spawn of Satan!!!" Heh, with a little kitten gets used more than you'd think.

By the smug look on her face here, you can bet she's probably just done something to claim the name. Like shredding curtains...

What is 'memory maker'?

Well, we know what it's NOT. Apparently it's NOT something that makes your MB remember all those ressies and FP times that you spent hours making and uploading onto your band before you left home...

Actually, that might be a new product for Disney. MB is free. Making it remember everything you want can be added with the new "Memory Maker" feature only $55.97.

OH MY GOSH what a cutie pie. how can a little thing like that be evil lol iknow that kitties are very creative when it comes to getting into trouble but darn it they do make things fun at times.
Fortunatley we were able to make up the day as we had included a no park day in the middle of the trip. but still wanted to hit the studios that day since it was the last day of the Osborne lights. but by the time they got things sorted out there would have only been a couple of hours there at most so it seemed like a waste to even go over there.

Ponzie, the Memory maker is the new name for Photopass. The kids decided to get that so they would have the Pics from the Disney photogs and the rides.

Question for you and any other north of the borders folks, what are nanimo bars? and how do you make them

Excellent lyric remake!!

Nanaimo bars are a yummy 3-layer treat that I didn't realize until now were a Canadian specialty. I guess I just figured it was a Canadian name for a standard sweet treat. They are a 3-layer square type desert. Bottom layer is graham and coconut, middle is is a firm butter cream custard, often colored and sometimes flavored (I like mine minty), and the top layer is basic chocolate.

Looked up a few recipes and they all appear pretty similar (and similar to ones I have made in the past), so I would let the City of Nanaimo have the official word:

Ah! Now I know.
As for nanaimo bars...
Bankr already answered that but the link doesn't seem to work for me.
Just in case it doesn't for you either, here's a recipe from Canadian Living magazine.

http://www.canadianliving.com/food/nanaimo_bars.php

I've never made, nor will I ever make, nanaimo bars.
pkondz does not ever, ever, do coconut.
I'm not that big a fan of walnuts either.
I will, however, if desperate, take a nanaimo bar and slice off the bottom third and just eat the top two!

New chapter up this weekend sometime but for now I feel the need to continue my theft of material from the dis royality:

Nice job on the lyrics! :thumbsup2

have you tried to make them without the coconut? now I need to make these, one of the kids at school was talking about them and they just sounded good also did not know Canada had a speciality dessert heck I just thought you all ate wunderbars lol
off to check that recipe thanks folks might have to test drive these

I think the coconut is needed to keep the base from falling apart.
At least, that's what someone told me when I suggested it.

awww thanks for fixing the image. I guess I will have to get the son in law to come over and take care of the photo uploads. He works pretty cheap, some pulled pork and my "slap your mamma" sauce is usually all it takes:rotfl:
Yes Miss Scarlett does have amazing blue eyes and I hope they stay that blue forever.

thanks again

Well after a less than stellar first day we decided to get to bed early so we could make an early start for extra magic hour at Animal Kingdom. We let Randy pick which park we hit for our first rope drop since he had never been before. He chose this one because he had seen a travel channel show about it. We really like this park and lance was anxious to visit EE for a chance to "get back in the coaster saddle" again.
After some coffee and a visit to the DSA in the courtyard outside our room we turned on the local weather. high 40's to mid 50's.:scared1: what I thought this was florida. So being the tough Californians that we are we layer up get out the gloves and shiver all the way to the bus stop. We make it to the park in good time and grab a pic out front. Lance is really trying hard to keep up since he had only been walking on his leg for about a week but so far so good.
We shinny up to the scanners (they don't have turnstiles anymore) and hold our breath while we press the mickey on our magic band to the mickey on the post..... boom baby we are in. all of us yeah. you would have thought we had just hit the lotto. The cm just looked at us like we were nuts. Lance told her you should have been with us yesterday, ::yes::

:headache: well as you must have figured out I lost half of my update so here is the rest of the first day

we left off where we were hooting like we had been told to come on down at the price is right.
once we had made it in shawndell and randy made a mad dash in while lance and I took the stroller and went a bit slower. and sure enough when we got past the oasis we ran into "those people" the ones who just stop in the dead center of the walkway and gape at the tree of life. :confused3really is it so hard to step off to the side to gape? so we told shawndell and randy to move over and we took some pics.:rolleyes1 we also tried to round up a photo pass photog but were told they would not be available until regular park hours. so off to Expidition Everest we went.
Lance and I had discussed going on the e ticket rides and he decided that since his last neurology check up was positive he would wait a bit more and try the e tickets at wdw. so we hustle back there and it was not running yet. No problem we just went over to the safari. it was a walk on, now randy is getting the picture about rope drop and why we get up early for the parks.
we saw quite a few animals and even had to stop for a mother giraffe nursing her baby, that was actually really cool to get to see. Nice thing about taking this ride early the animals are out and about. they finally got rid of that poacher babble also.
by the time we were done we got to Everest just as it was opening and between the baby swap we all got have a couple of rides due to the light crowds and swapping off with scarlett. I'm not going to lie here I was really pretty nervous but lance made it through and had no issues other than lugging that heavy boot on his leg but no dizziness or light headedness.
next stop was some snackie cakes. they have this walkup window I have been reading about for quite a while and they did have some great danishs and a cinnamon roll that was HUGE. Scarlett found out that cream cheese icing is pretty good (when her mom wasn't looking) and now that our blood sugar was nice and high we went out to the plant watch the train ride loaded pretty fast and pretty soon we were there checking out the place. we had one pit stop first so scarlett could meet her first characters. Chip and Dale were there and they had the photo pass people there too. time to try out the new memory maker. that means we have to use THOSE bands again but this went well scarlett didn't scream actually she really liked the whole process and made cute for the characters and the photog. chip even went after my daughter and tapped her n the shoulder so he could "kiss" scarlett who just giggled. the kid is a natural I tell ya.
went in and watched them change a duct tape cast on a bird's wing (no kidding duct tape! I now believe it when they say it can fix anything)
lance needed to rest up a bit so we took a stroll the the petting area where scarlett was rather bored I guess she figured these animals did not compare to the two huge rodents earlier.
after a while we were going to head out and "Pappa" wanted check out the stuffies so he can get scarlett a present, because of course the poor thing doesn't have enough stuffed animals already *insert eye roll here" so we hand her a nala. I told lance that whatever he handed her she would not let go. he tried to hand her another one but nope she wanted that nala so off we went to pay for it. seconds from a clean get away in come mom and dad. it was time for the grandpa to get mildly scolded. "dad you can't buy her something already, blah blah blah spoiling the granddaughter blah blah blah. all in good fun I mean heck what are grandbabies for anyway, right? shawndell even brought up how "when I was a kid we had to wait until towards the end of the trip in case we saw something else we liked and here we are on the first day" blah blah blah, for the record scarlett did not let that suffie out of her reach for the whole trip. Thankfully shawndell had brought these really nifty straps that could be put around poor nala's neck and hooked on to the stroller so we did not have to worry about nala trying to escape. (wish they had had those when my kids were little would have saved on a lot of stooping to pick up run away toys)
we were getting hungry again so I suggested flame tree. well actually pressed the point. I had never eaten there before and always regretted it
so off we went. Huge amounts of food here. Lance and I split a plate and were pretty full. by now we were really cold and lance's leg was throbbing pretty bad so we decided to head back for a rest before heading out to epcot tonight. after all we did get that "comp" fast pass for test track after loosing our first day (and missing the Osborne lights) (eyeroll )
so we head back and lance laid down for a bit and I made it out to the pool. pretty cold still but the hot tub was up and running. man you can sure tell the snow birds out here they are playing around in the main pool walking around in shorts etc. Met a nice family from Conn. they were killing time and trying to figure out if they were going to make it home. they told me about another family that had pretty much rebook for almost a week due to weather in Canada. holy cow.
also they asked me how I liked my magic band. for the most part they loved theirs but had run into folks and heard horror stories. so at this point I just nod and say "yeah we were one of those horror stories but they seem to be fine now" with that we chatted for a bit and I dried off and went to get some coffee in my cool and groovy refillable mug (now included in the dining plan since folks did not want to pony up 15 bucks a pop for them lol) next up
we freeze our way through future land

things I think:
I think that entry is much quicker with the magic bands
I think that we had a goldilocks experience with cast members fixing our bands an finally got one that was just right.
I think I take our southern California weather for granted....
I think since we are flying through Chicago I may want to keep an eye on the weather reports in case another storm starts making its way across the country at the end of the week.
I think we are liking this grandparent job and getting baby girl her first dis goodie from wdw was awesome. yes we are like the grandparents in that bit bill cosby did back in the 90's
I think we will be hearing a lot of stories about being stuck and unable to get home due to weather before the week is out.

Just a quick note to let you know that I haven't forgotten about you!
I haven't read the last post yet, but I will.
Might be a day or two, but I will.

I've seen the same show. Little deceiving now. I think when they update the parks, they should update their shows. The Yeti is not working and there are a lot of changes going on now.

We really like this park and lance was anxious to visit EE for a chance to "get back in the coaster saddle" again.

I'm BACK! I'm back on the coaster again.
I'm BACK! I'm back on the coaster again.

Riding into AK this mornin'
I can still see the moon.
Been looking forward to this moment
I hope we get there soon.
Can't wait to ride EE
That's when it caught my eye.
I can see it on the brink
It made this grown man cry.

I'm BACK! I'm back on the coaster again.
I'm BACK! I'm back on the coaster again.

After some coffee and a visit to the DSA in the courtyard outside our room we turned on the local weather. high 40's to mid 50's.:scared1:

Well if you had to turn it on, don't you think you would've turned it on to at least be in the high 70's to maybe mid 80's? :confused3

what I thought this was florida.

It is Florida. You turned on the wrong weather.

So being the tough Californians that we are we layer up get out the gloves and shiver all the way to the bus stop. We make it to the park in good time and grab a pic out front.

I didn't know you could grab pics? Were there CM's just handing them out? I must've missed that on our last trip. I hope you grabbed a nice one. One of the Tree of Life possibly.

Lance is really trying hard to keep up since he had only been walking on his leg for about a week but so far so good.

Wow. I knew he broke his leg, but I didn't know they gave him a new one. I think I would've been struggling to keep up to if I only had a week to learn to walk on it. I would want my old leg back that I've been walking on all my life. Poor guy. At least he managed.

We shinny up to the scanners

Shinny? Is the new form of shimmy? You could've been like Ponzi and sashayed.

(they don't have turnstiles anymore)

Good to know.

and hold our breath while we press the mickey on our magic band to the mickey on the post.....

I hope you remembered to breathe again.
Holding_Your_Breath_O8LQE7.gif

boom baby we are in. all of us yeah.

Well I think it would've been a little awkward if you all didn't get in.

"Sorry Lance. You're a trooper and we're glad you made it all this way. Too bad you can't come in with us. We'll meet up with you later though."

The cm just looked at us like we were nuts. Lance told her you should have been with us yesterday, ::yes::

On a serious note (imagine that, T-Man, serious, who would've thunk it), I'm glad so far that you all made it into the park. Off to read the rest of the chapter now.

Betsy, glad you made it in ok and the bands were cooperating! Thanks for the update.

T-Man, funny breakdown, lol.

Marita

I'm in and enjoying your TR so far. After having AP's last year I decided to actually visit other parts of the world this year. The regular world, not "the World." DH is not happy. We're going on a cruise to Alaska in June (not Disney, as they only depart from Vancouver and airfare to Seattle from R.I. is a fraction of airfare to Vancouver).

Anyway, I wanted to chime in and say my favorite part of each report is the "I think....." section. We just missed out on Magic Bands on our last trip and boy am I glad, after reading all these nightmare scenarios that people are having.

Also, I have been known to plagiarize Nebo many many times. Last time we were at Beach Club, waiting for the bus back to the airport, someone came out and asked if this was where Magical Express picked you up. I said, "No, when you're going back it's called Magical Depress." It got a big laugh and I actually looked around, guiltily, for someone to yell at me for stealing Nebo's line. But nobody did so I just ducked my head modestly and enjoyed the stolen credit.
