I need some help please. My friend's computer is on the fritz. She said that after she starts it up, in about 10-15 minutes, it will give her this error message:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

And there's something about a stop error - STOP 0x0000007A (0xC02015A0, 0xC000000E, 0x805684AE, 0x02422860) - and tells her to shut down and restart in Safe Mode. It also says that it's "currently dumping physical memory." Not very reassuring.

Any clues on what might be wrong? She's trying to decide whether to repair this one or just buy a new one.

Thanks!

Sounds like its time to reinstall the OS. Does she have a set of recovery disks? Or a copy of the OS on CD?

I just talked to here again - Her computer won't start. When she boots up, it says something about 'system device not found' (I kinda forgot what she said). It's a Dell laptop with an Intel processor and running XP. She's going to talk to the computer services at our school, but any ideas would be nice. :D

Hard Drive crash? How old is the computer? I can ask DH when he gets home - he builds/fixes computers as a hobby.

I'm kind of busy at work Hes, but here's a link to start with...

I cannot find right now anything about the second parameter you have listed for XP (only for 2000). I know, not much of a help there, but it is something to at least read and get an idea on the generic Stop 0x0000007A or KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR message they are getting. Good luck.

Try these:

While restarting the computer, tap on F8 until you get a Windows Advanced Options Menu. Try to boot into Safe Mode. If you can get into Safe Mode, run a system restore to a time before you had the problem. If you can't get into Safe Mode, select Last Known Good Configuration on the Advanced Options Menu.

If you still can't boot up, remove all added perhperials and any added hardware in the computer. If you can get into the BIOS, reset the BIOS defaults.

If the error still comes up, it's time to reinstall the OS.

Now you owe me $5. :)

Sounds to me like a bad Hard disk drive.

If it's an IBM or Hitachi drive, you can run a Drive Fitness Test on it, and that *may* repair bad sectors, if the drive is repairable. If not, you may want to think about purchasing a new drive and getting your OS cd handy to reinstall....

If you have a set of Recovery CDs or Restore CDs, try cancelling out of the CD when you boot to it. If you get an A: prompt, type in FDISK /MBR. If you get an error "No fixed disk present," then your hard drive is bad.

At start up, references to "page" usually mean memory or swap. If this is a disk issue, she should see a problem with the hardware discovery right after the BIOS loads. I would be willing to bet, however that the Kernel is loading and hitting a bad memory location. If this is a Dell with XP, it may be new enough for warrantee service.

Upon further investigation and searching, I found this. Looks like the "Last Known Good Configuration" is a good thing to try. That is IF she can get it to boot at all.

Looks like you MAY owe Barry $5.

Ted

P.S. - This particular message is rather vague. It means that the Kernel (the main OS program) is having trouble loading something from disk into memory. Some causes were listed as: Bad sector on the drive, loose cable from motherboard to drive, scratches or cracks on the motherboard, or bad memory modules. It looks like a Microsoft catch-all. The second hex value is supposed to give away the culprit. It just isn't listed anywhere that I found on the MS Knowledgebase.
