Merry Christmas to all the futture renters??? As of Today, 12/12/25 Hertz Orlando is installing scanners—- they are up but not turned on yet. Ifminhad
To guess- they’ll be operational by the end of the week…

Last time
I rent from Hertz here

it doesn’t matter eventually there all going to have them so I guess your not renting cars anymore

Assume they are the type that supposedly automatically detects damage to the vehicle. There was a recent thread about that a few weeks ago on here as I recall. Interesting to see how well they work if the car is wet from a recent rainstorm or in other parts of the country that get snow/ice..............LOL.

I've wondered if, for those that have had massive bills, if one could request the pictures from the last time the rental was turned in. Let's see the "before" and "after" versions.

I've heard though that simple "wear and tear" items could end up being the renter's responsibility. Like a door ding if parked next to someone who opens their door too quick. To say nothing about claims that water on the vehicle has produced "false positives" of damage.

It takes photos of your car upon your exit and return. They include these photos in any damage billings. The issue isn’t whether you’re being charged for someone else’s damage, but rather the pettiness of the charges. People are reporting being billed hundreds of dollars for tiny door dings and scratches that could easily be rubbed out.

Would make me weary of taking a rental into a Disney parking lot. Our own cars have taken a beating at Disney parking lots through the years. Spaced are tight and excited children and ignorant adults in adjacent cars quickly open their doors, dining the other car. Especially as more and more people feel the need to own a Monster Pickup Truck. The spaces simply aren’t large enough to comfortably park these vehicles.

These scanners will definitely find ways that are absolutely absurd to make more money for these agencies. Par for the course now days.

On my last visit, I was surprised to see that Sixt had these scanners. I didn’t understand what the device was when I exited with the vehicle but clearly understood on return. So far no problem but I made careful videos on pickup and return.

I stopped renting from Hertz when they started using them since I didn't want to have to keep track if what airports they had them at.

Every single rental agency has them at the new consolidated LAX rental facility (although only a couple rental companies have moved in, the rest will join them soon). They’ll be everywhere before the end of the decade.

We did a one-way Avis rental from a neighborhood location near our home to LAX (too far to ask for a ride, and cheaper than parking there). Filled the ta k up at a gas station across the street from the facility. Upon entry, cameras check you in and look for damage while connected service sends fuel and mileage info. So within seconds of entering, we get a bill. They penalized us something like $60 for not retuning on a full tank… again, we topped it off at the gas station nearby. It was a Kia Soul and we put 55 miles on it, nearly all on the highway, and 2.8 gallons of gas in it. Absolutely no way we used 2.8 gallons.

That’s why people hate the AI system. At least with Avis, it takes less effort to get ahold of a human and they did remove it.

I hope you could just show them a receipt that you filled the tank.

The AI system is determining the tank wasn’t completely full, not that it wasn’t filled. Unfortunately, employees cannot assist at the airport - you must contact Avis. That’s the chief complaint with Hertz - it’s challenging to get past their chatbot/ automated system. Thankfully Avis is easier and removed the charge without me sending anything in.

I recall my parents, then later me, filling up the rental car at the Exxon/ Hess/ Speedway station near the Magic Kingdom… and driving it all the way to MCO. Guess those days are gone :). Granted, it’s been many years since I’ve done something like that.

Luckily I don’t fly LAX. So problem solved.

How will that prove you filled the tank?
I guess you can't exactly but if you just put $25 in at a station just outside the airport, the odds are good that it's full. If you didn't drive very much and only need to add a little, you're screwed, other than taking video to show the pump click off.
Sure makes me want to not rent a car.
