It depends on the rental terms, but most rental companies won't charge for small amounts of gas if you show a receipt from a nearby station. This won't work if the tank is half full, but if the needle is close to full then it normally covers you.

It shows you got gas at that station, at a particular date & time.

I agree, on it's own doesn't prove anything, but combined with other data (tdropoff time, mileage, & fuel level at time of dropoff), should be enough to "fight" a complaint that you didn't fuel up.

Gas station pumps have to be inspected my a local government agency, typically something with weights and measures in the title. That certifies that the pumps are accurately dispensing gas by volume. Perhaps the car rental agencies should be required to have their cars inspected regularly to prove their telemetry is accurate.

Using FL417 and the south entrance to the airport, there is a Shell station on Jeff Fuqua Blvd. just outside the airport. Google maps reports it’s about 2.5 miles from the car rental garage, depending on whether you use the A- or B-side rental return. The gas prices there have seemed competitive to me. I used to fill up at the Hess station (now Speedway) by the BoardWalk and the gauge would still report a full tank, but with the use of telemetry that may no longer work so well. I’m always hesitant to keep pumping in gas manually to top off the tank once the pump has shut itself off, since that may back up gas into the charcoal canister of the evaporative emissions system, potentially triggering the check engine light.
