Hertz at MCO...how is it?

With less than 2 weeks to go, I'm finally seeing some drops in car rentals at all the major agencies.

Interestingly (to me) is that Hertz is quite competitive with the rates. I'm accustomed to them, along with Avis and National, to be at the high end.

Did they absorb their Firefly spinoff back into the Hertz fold?

Anyway, I'm curious as to what kind of experience other DISers have had with Hertz at MCO. Is it worth signing up for their frequent rental club (Gold club, I believe)? Can you go straight out to the garage, pick a car out yourself, etc.? How would you rate convenience vs. say Alamo?

Thanks in advance...its been decades since I've rented from Hertz, and that was for business.

If you sign up for Gold membership, you can just go directly to the Ultimate Choice lot and select your car from the area marked for Gold members. Gold members can book an intermediate car and select any available vehicle from the Gold area - usually up to full size.

Thanks...it makes sense to go ahead and sign up for that, even if I ultimately don't use Hertz. I'll go ahead and do it...

Check your auto insurance/bank benefits. Some of them offer complementary gold membership as a perk.

A flag that after I signed up for Gold, I still had to go to the Gold counter my first time renting to get a photo ID in the system.

What vehicles have been seen in the full size aisle? With Priceline can you use your gold card or do you have to go to the rental counter in the airport?

I have rented through Hertz Gold many times at MCO (and other places) and only once did I have to settle for a less than desirable vehicle. The 'chose your car' lot was empty of possible upgrades. You do have to go to the counter for your first Gold rental but after that it was walk to your car and go. In my experience Hertz car return is quick and painless. If you can get a good price at Hertz I would go for it.
