My dd9 woke up this morning and her little toe is swollen and red. She says it hurts like she stubbed it or banged on something. As the morning goes on, her foot is getting redder and is warm to the touch compared with her other foot. I'm getting a little concerned. The base clinic, of course, is closed today. I'd have to take her to the ER or possibly try to get her in at Little spurs, which could take all day to get approval for. I'm looking at her foot and my gut says infection of some sort. She had her H1N1 shot the other day. Could this be some sort of reaction? Thanks, oh wise ones!!

Can she walk on it? Was she wearing new or tight shoes yesterday? Did she get her feet wet while playing in the snow yesterday?

It sounds to me like an "almost" blister, or a corn-like sore. I've had them before after the above mentioned activities, and the symptoms are similar.

Could it be a bite of some kind? The only time my toe has ever become red and swollen was when I was stung by a wasp.

If it looks like a bite, maybe some Benadryl will help.

If she banged it on something she could have sprained it or broken the toe. The swelling will cause the redness and make it feel warm. Look on the bottom of her foot, is there a fairly defined bruise at the base of her toe? If so, there is a very good chance it is broken. Unless the toe is sticking out at an odd angle, they won't do anything for her in the ER. Ice the toe and see if that helps.

Otherwise, check for an ingrown toenail. If that is the case, soak her foot in warm soapy water several times today and that should take care of it.

Unless you see red streaks traveling up her foot, it doesn't sound like an ER trip is necessary.

Two guesses come to mind. Paronychia, which is a skin infection surrounding a nail. Redness, swelling, and painful. The other guess would be cellulitis, again is a skin infection that is red, swollen, and painful.

I would keep a close eye on it. If it doesn't start improving SOON, I would definitely get a PROFESSIONAL medical opinion.

If the redness and warmth seem to be spreading, I would try to get in somewhere. It is possible that this is just an injury but in all the times of stubbed or broken my toe, swelling is immediate and you know what it is. It usually quickly gets to a point and then stops getting worse.

Update. The swelling seems to have peaked. It's going down now, still red, still a bit painful. No bruise, but like the above poster mentioned, it could be somehiow nail related. the swelling seems like it's centered at the base of the nail. The nail looks normal, but i don't know. Thanks for the advice. i'm going to continue to watch it.

ty for posting this. the day we left for disney we noticed exactly what you descibed above on dd's finger at 6am at the airport no less. we drained it and watched over the weeks as her nail changed shape. our doctor never said a word to us when we showed it to her. oh i lie she sai yeah she may loose it. rite before we left dd i believe also had a yeast infection, so that makes one hundred % sense now. gotta love the disboards!

back to the op: is it possible its ingrown anywhere? i have had horrible ingrown nails on my toes to the point of minor surgery. and i get them on any toe, not just my big ones.

Also, be careful if she has a cut somewhere close to the swelling. My dsis had a cut on the bottom of her foot and was walking around the house barefoot and not wearing socks with her shoes. The top of her foot had something similar to what you are saying, redness and swelling. Turned out to be a staph infection of some sort. Evidently it can show up anywhere. I would definitely just have a dr check it when you get the chance.

I am taking her in this morning. She woke up in pain today and her affected foot is hotter than her other. Plus, she has another red spot cropping up on anaother toe. I just got off the phone with the nurse line and she defintely feels like Grace needs to be seen. I'll update later. Please keep us in prayer that it's nothing serious.

I was going with ingrown nail but not if it seems to be spreading. GL and . I am sure it will be nothing.

It is probably something like poison ivy or something similar. It is a good idea to go in now since it is spreading. It might even be athlete's foot
