Here's my suggestion for cheap eats while staying at the WDW resorts...

If this has been mentioned, I apologize. Anyways, we stayed at the POFQ a couple of weeks ago and noticed that you can buy 2 slices of bread for .70 cents in the bakery section. On the same counter, they have free peanut butter packets. After you pay for your bread, around the corner from the cash registers are strawberry jam packets. So, for .70 cents, you can make PB & J sandwiches! We did this during our whole trip for 2 reasons:
1) Our toddlers love PB & J sandwiches
2) They are picky eaters and don't eat very much. No point in spending a lot of money on food if they won't eat it, right?
If you couple this with the refillable mugs, you've got a pretty cheap meal.

Anyone else done this before or have done something like this before?

Well, it's no different than buying two pieces of bread, toasting them and then putting jelly/peanut butter on them in the morning. I just never thought about doing that. And here I buy bread and peanut butter on each trip. I may have to rethink that purchase.

have done this when I was a struggling college student but would never think of doing it now, with kids and at a resort. I believe in saving money when you can but this seems to be taking advantage of a situation.

Just my 2 cents.

Believe me. I'm not one to rip off anyone. However, given that I'm buying the bread and the PB packets are on the tray for them to see, I don't see how this can be taking advantage of the situation.

I guess this begs the question...do others feel this is immoral? Am I doing something wrong here?

No, it's not wrong. You are paying 70 cents for 2 slices of bread...what is that? Maybe $12 a loaf that they probably paid 50 cents for! If they were losing money they'd charge more for the bread or charge for the peanut butter.

Thanks, misspie. For a minute there, I thought I was doing something completely wrong. I know this sounds, cheap(in more ways than one), it is cost effective and that was my reason why I wanted to share this with you.

Nah, this is something that I WILL DO! I am HOOKED on PB&J. Have been eating it for nearly 26 yrs straight. I eat it at LEAST once a day.

The condiments are FREE. You PAID for the 2 slices of bread. You are doing nothing wrong or immoral. We are staying at POFQ on Sunday, and you WILL be seeing me doing this :)

Plus, I have to eat breakfast or I get REALLY crabby and have headaches. I am a light eater and this is so very perfect! What a great tip!

...now, the next question is whether or not they have chocolate milk to put into refillable mugs :)

You really just made my day lap3! :grouphug:

I'm glad that I'm not alone on this one. I, too, love PB&J! Although, I don't have it everyday,:rolleyes1 I will have one for lunch once a week. I don't know how you'll get refillable chocolate milk, though. That'll be tough! Good luck with that one...

Let me know how it goes. You'll have a great time, I'm sure. Darn, I wish I can go back to WDW...

We just went down in February and I bought my 8 yo and 2 yo different kid's menu items every night trying to find one they would eat. No such luck. BIG waste of money. If I had known about this then, not only would I have saved alot of money, but the kids would have actually put something other than fries in their stomachs. Thanks for the tip, next time we'll try it.

How is this taking advantage of anything? Aren't the PB and Jelly packets put there so people can put them on their bread? I don't know, maybe I missed something. LOL :confused3

You paid for the bread and the PB and jelly is provided for customers of the bakery, so no problem. Why else would it be there for the taking if not for people buying bread or toast from the bakery?

It would only be an issue if you bought your bread at the supermarket and stopped by the bakery every day to load up on free PB and jelly packets!

Nothing wrong with this at all and I think it's a great way to be sure your kids get to eat what they like!

I agree. They expect people to take it. Just like jelly you can put it on your bagels too. Don't be shy. :teeth:

Does anyone know if you can do this at the POP Century. I would be willing to pay the .70 for bread and pick up some pj and jelly packets. I was thinking for bringing my own but one less thing I have to pack.

They don't have peanut butter at Animal Kingdom Lodge. I did this when we went to Pop Century last time and it worked great.

I absolutely love this! I'll be doing it at PopCentury in July, but does anyone know about this working at Boardwalk? We're doing a split stay, and I'd love to keep it up!

Great idea!

When we stayed at POP, I loved that they had brown sugar and half-and-half at no cost. For breakfast, I would buy a bowl of oatmeal plus a banana to cut up on top of it, add brown sugar and hal-and-half, and have a delicious, healthy, and reasonably-priced breakfast.

this seems to be taking advantage of a situation.

You are totally wrong on this one. And, you totally missed the point.

Taking advantage of the situation would be taking the PB and J packets w/o purchasing anything, going back to your room and putting it on bread that you brought in w/you from the supermarket.

The OP is purchasing the bread and the condiments are available for using w/what you purchase. At least the OP has made a valid purchase and isn't ripping WDW off. It's like taking the cream to cool off your hot chocolate. Is it only there for the coffee drinkers? And, what if you bought strawberries and wanted to sweeten them w/sugar? Should you not take the sugar packets b/c they're for the coffee drinkers? And, how is what the OP did any different from my buying a bagel and taking the jelly and butter to put on it?

The OP put this out there so other parents would be informed that their child can find something to eat at WDW. Even if you have to haul back to your resort for lunch.

And, why spend $4+ on a kids meal that your child won't eat? It's not as if she's denying her child any meals and forcing that child to only eat PB&J. She stated that the child is a picky eater and she found a good, inexpensive route to take. If it's what I had to do to get my child to eat something at WDW, I'd do it, too. And, I had no idea there was PB. My DS loves PB toast in the morning ... so now he'll have another food option for breakfast!

DH and I don't have kids but I still very much appreciated hearing about this! We usually eat a big breakfast and don't eat again until dinner time but some days I do get a bit hungry at some point during the day for something quick with a bit of protein in it. I'm a vegetarian and though Disney restaurants do make some effort to provide veggie options, they are limited, and often protein free. So, I appreciated hearing about this tip as a way I might grab a quick snack (with some protein!!) by checking out the bakeries at Disney to see if I can make a peanut butter sandwich. And I'd be quite happy to pay for the packet of peanut butter, too if need be. I like the convenience aspect of it -- buy some bread and something to drink, spread on the peanut butter and go find a nice place to sit and relax while I eat my sandwich!

Thanks, Daxx! I'm glad you see it my way! Again, I don't make it a habit of ripping anyone off. I bought the bread, I put the PB on the tray for anyone to see(especially the person working the cash register), and I picked up some strawberry jelly.

BTW, I'm a "he" and not a "she"... :rolleyes1

I think this is a very good idea. We might do this for breakfast to get more protein on board to get dc to lunch time. TY for sharing this.
