So many people wish they could do something. Here is what you CAN do----GIVE BLOOD. The LA/MS/AL blood supply has been hit hard. Many units are being transferred to the area to help victims, leaving the rest of the US in short supply... not to mention this will be a Holiday weekend, which traditionally demand large blood supplies as well.

For those who don't know, a unit of blood is only good for 45 days... and when a natural disaster the magnitude of this one happens, units must be pulled from all over (not even mentioning the supply that was lost in the storm and flood waters due to loss of electricity, contamination, and poor or little refrigeration)... leaving the rest of the nation at a loss. Remember blood will still desperately be needed in other parts of the country for cancer patients, sickle cell patients, other dire anemias, emergencies, and traumas. THIS COULD EFFECT YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW. What if your family member was involved in a tragic accident and there simply wasn't blood availabe to save their life?????

Call your local blood center, Red Cross, whatever. Give the gift of life. It isn't bad, it barely hurts and you will know that you saved someone else... plus you get treats and a t-shirt too!!!

Please I'm begging... if you can GIVE... encourage others to give. We need you!!!!!!

JoEllen - Kudos to you for reminding people how they can be of assistance. I gave this morning - was actually a scheduled appointment already. Even those how are unable to help by giving money can help in other ways.

Please remember though that blood donations should not only be given in times of disasters but throughout goods times as well. There is always a need. Times of tragedy bring just a bigger need.

Our hearts and prayers go out to those who are suffering at this time and those who will surely feel the effects of Katrina for years to come. God bless you and keep you from harms way.

Eeyore - What a wonderful site....so full of information. thank you for posting.

I'm giving red blood cells and plasma tomorrow!

Every one please make an effort to give!!! :goodvibes

This is a great post, but remember not everyone can give blood! Some people have or had diseases or illnesses that prevent them from ever giving blood. (Like myself!) But I encourage those who CAN donate to please do! Our country has been in a blood shortage for too long now and even if your donation does not go to the hurricane victims, we need all the help we can get.

That is why I put "almost everyone" I realize some can't give, including myself... I work as a lab manager and I can't give (due to heart and pituitary issues)... but I can encourage others!!!... we all know at least one person we can encourage!!

Just trying to do what I can! My DH was depolyed this morning to NO for disaster relief... I probably won't hear from him for weeks!
