Hemming prom gown?

Thank you that sounds like her dress, I think I am going to give her $20,and hope she takes it!

Can I gently nudge you toward a gift card or something other than cash? When someone refuses payment, if you are going to pay them anyway shouldn't you make it look like exchanging gifts? I think so.

I'd give her a $25 gift card to Joanne Fabrics or whatever fabric store is in your town, along with a handwritten thank you note. I agree with the previous poster who suggested enclosing a picture of DD in the dress!
Happy Prom to your DD. :cloud9:

I am thinking $40 is about what they would charge. I have done my nieces' prom gowns/formal dresses for them. I am pretty experienced and to do it right takes me a couple of hours for each dress because it involves not just cutting, but then to do a narrow hem is a pain in the patookie because you have to sew, cut again, iron, stitch again, etc. and formal wear is usually satin, which can be tricky! I think the $20 would be very appropriate as a thank-you, and she's probably be really happy. I'd have been happy to get just a verbal thank-you from my nieces, but I guess that's not really done anymore by most kids these days.

I recently got conned into making bridesmaid dresses for a friend and I swear finishing the hems was the worst part! Of course it depends on the style of dress and the fabric, but if you don't do a lot of sewing I think you might be surprised at just how much work finishing a nice hem can be.

I think $20 would be appropriate, but as others have suggested, I would probably go with a gift card rather than cash.

When I was a kid my neighbor used to trim my bangs in exchange for homemade cookies. Maybe there's something she would really like but won't make or get for herself?

I hate to do any alterations, but will for family/friends if the beg, cry, whine...When I do them for people that won't take NO! for an answer I don't charge, but suggest they donate to their church, or fav. charity, or pass on a good deed. When they do some thing for me it is usuall a gift card, to a fabric store. You would be suprised how much a spool of thread, and a package of good needles cost!

I too would give a thank you card with a restaurant gift card. I feel as if almost everyone would love to have this as u have to eat!!!:lovestruc:lovestruc:lovestruc

I too, paid $35.00 for cutting of the hem, no actual sewing. At first I thought that was a little much, but it seems to be the norm.

DD's prom dress needed to be shortened, and it needed the "extra gappy space" tightened up by the bust. The bridal store would have charged $50 for the bust area, and then $135 for the shortening ($15 for each layer - there were 9 layer)

We have a wonderful person who does alterations - and did the needed alterations for $70.

I think a GC for $30 or $40 would be great. Personally - I would do something spa related - mani/pedi or a massage if I knew the person would like that.

One of my, good friends is a seamstress. She charges $25/hr.

I like the idea of a GC over cash too. Places like Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, locally owned coffee shop, a bakery in town or another favorite place. :)
