HELP! Yacht Club Resort Issue:

My family and I were in Disney at the end of January and we stayed at the Yacht Club. On the 3rd to the last day of our trip, we came back from the parks to let the kids take a nap and walked into a construction site. We could not walk down the hallway because of large construction dumpsters and workers everywhere wearing masks. The rooms all around us were GONE…Completely gutted to the studs with the bathrooms removed too! When we got into our room, they were literally jackhammering in the rooms on either side of us. The whole room (walls and floors) were shaking! We took the following videos. (Click on link below.)

We were moved to the Beach Club and they gave us a few small things for the inconvenience, but the more my wife and I look back on it, the more upset we are about the whole situation. We spent a lot of money for a deluxe resort and this issue ruined/overshadowed the end of our trip. It completely threw off the last 2.5 days of our vacation and it now seems to be the only thing that our kids remember about the trip.

What does everyone think? And what can I do about it?

I honestly don't think you can do much about it at this point. You mentioned that you moved to BC and were given a "few small things for the inconvenience", so I'm going to assume that you spoke with someone at the front desk in regard to the situation and your displeasure with it. If you wanted something more than what they gave you, the time to ask for that was then.

We had a similar issue with construction at the YC. We were staying in a lagoon view, Club Level room, so not inexpensive! THAT is why I never book a resort with any construction anymore. It was literally painfully loud in that room! We could not return to our room between about 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. WAY too uncomfortable! We stuck it out for 3 days by staying away from the resort during the day. However, we asked to move after we woke up to the noise of someone working ON OUR BALCONY while we were sleeping with the patio door open (about 7:30 am).
They moved us to the BC. No apologies, no offers of any kind. We were so happy and relieved to be out of there, I frankly didn't give any thought to compensation. Probably should have complained - just didn't occur to us.

The idea that Disney always keeps disruption to guests minimal during construction doesn't really ring true to us after that experience, though.

It is 2 months later, you were moved, and in your own words given a few small things for the inconvenience. So at this point it sounds like there isn't much you should expect. Of course you are always free to write but waiting two months looks like you just want more.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. You never should have been placed in that room. Yes, they moved you (which is an inconvenience to you), but, IMHO, it's unacceptable. I would e-mail them and state exactly what you stated here. That it really ruined your trip and it's still eating at you. Hopefully you will at least get a reply and an apology.

But who do i email?

I think it was unacceptable. But, I think the best thing you can do now is just work to get over the disappointment. It's over and done with

Wow, I just watched your videos. I actually am really shocked they left you in that room. And in a room with a connecting door no less! I would also imagine there was considerable dust & dirt flying around in the air too.

Did you show that video to the hotel manager? I am actually going against the pack here tho. I would actually send that video to guest communications. Maybe tell them that while you appreciate that you were eventually moved, it is still weighing on you & how much it disrupted your vacation. Who wants to spend all the time & money to take their kids to a Disney deluxe resort & have their memories be that mess? I would tho make clear I wasn't looking for compensation. But I just want Disney to be aware of the way this type of construction really impacts their paying customers, how really loud & disruptive it is. So maybe some other family doesn't have to deal with that.

I too agree its unacceptable to be in a room that close to the jackhammering. Did they move you immediately or did you have to spend a night there before they found you a new room and were able to move you?

And what can I do about it?

Complain or don't. I focused on what you said about the kids.

You can help guide your kids in talking about the trip.

I assume that immediately after those videos you went to the front desk and got moved? If so, you have a ton of pictures and I assume videos that do NOT involve construction. You can show them all of that, create discussions about the *no construction* part of your trip, and I assume have pretty pictures from beach club.

Alas construction has to happen sometime. Since others here talked about the construction this was obviously known of earlier, and since it can't happen at night, if you are in the room during the daytime you're going to hear it.

But they moved you, and I assume that was taken care of (or got the process started) within the hour. So even most of that day should not have been filled with the construction. Help them focus on those parts of the trip.

Thats how you'll help the kids work past this.

My son was 2 and we went to Disneyland. Dh's dad it sick and dh had to leave the family trip to help. Wr got home and his grandpa was in the hospital. Was there a total of a month before he died. After that ds and I nearly lived with MIL as I did all the paperwork and phone calls etc for her because she doesn't like speaking English on the phone and didn't understand what needed timber done.

We never talked about the trip during those two months. I figured he had forgotten about it due to the relative trauma ds was experiencing from the stress of the adults around him.

Then a few weeks later he started talking about the trip and how much fun he had had. Sometimes it just takes them time to process it all.

Holy cow!! That's horrible. I can understand having a bit of noise at a resort because of construction but that is crazy!! I don't know that there is anything you can do at this point but I do think it's important for you to get those videos to WDW so someone can see what happened because that actually seems like a safety issue to me. It seems like maybe you were booked into a room that was supposed to be vacant considering all the other rooms around you were completely gutted. Typically in a situation like that you shouldn't even be able to enter such an extreme construction "zone." And with all the dust and debris that flies around in that scenario . . . just UGH! I think you should make sure WDW understands the extent of the situation so they can make sure construction and resort scheduling communicate better in the future. It seems like SOMEONE should have been aware that you needed to be moved to another room either before you checked in or, at the latest, before they gutted everything.

Surely someone knew they were going to do construction and when you checked in they should have told you. I could even see them saying due to the construction you could do a split stay at least you would be prepared.

A YC CM told me that due to the extensive demolition and construction, more than at any other resort room refurbishment project at WDW, no guests would be booked into rooms directly below any areas being worked on. Why in the world would they book guests into a room right next to active demo and construction?

This trip was two months ago. I agree that the noise was overwhelming, but you were moved and compensated for your troubles. Squawking about it now (complete with the video with you asking your if he's scared) just looks like you are fishing for more compensation/a free stay. I think it's time to build a bridge...

First with that type of construction WDW should have closed that whole portion of the building down. Go ahead and send guest services an email, they should always hear about incidents like these. If you want to send the video of the construction noise and dust then go ahead, but the video of your son is not relevant.
